[This is cross-posted at another forum, but I thought it would be interesting to share here as well.]

As no doubt many of you have heard, many of our conservative brothers and sisters have been up in arms over a report on Right-Wing Extremism (pdf warning) issued by the Obama administration in 2009, despite the facts that

* None of the indignant conservatives appear to have actually read the report, because they believe the "right-wing extremist" label to be far broader than its definition in the report
* The report was compiled by the Bush Administration
* The Obama administration also released a report on Left-Wing Extremism (pdf warning)

Anyway, I've been saving news articles about actual right-wing extremism for the past couple of years, and decided to list them all here. Feel free to add any I missed.

Keith Olberman recently cited the false claim the right-wing media made about keeping America safer after the hijacking of airplanes and destruction of '911.' He then cited the many acts of terrorism the right-wing media neglected to mention that were reported by the Bush Administration during their reign of ignorance.

Ignorance is bliss in the unenlightened mind of a conservative.

He may not have committed an act of violence, but this thread about right-wing extremism reminds me of Ken Cuccinelli, Virginia's Attorney General (ayatollah general). When he had lapel pins made up for his staff, he changed the State Seal so the Roman Goddess Virtus had the exposed side of her chest covered up with a breasplate. He thought he would take it upon himself to make Virtue more virtuous. Typical of puritanism and religious authoritarianism. Cuccinelli was merely reinforcing the recent suggestion of his fundamentalist brother, Iranian cleric H. K. Sedighi, who recently stated that women behaving promiscuously and showing skin causes earthquakes. Cuccinelli also sent a letter to Virginia's public colleges and universities telling them that they may not include sexual orientation or gender identity in their nondiscrimination policies, i.e., trying to scare them into rescinding policies that were already in place. Fortunately, in this instance, he didn't really have the power to legislate his conservative, right-wing religious agenda on Virginia's institutions of higher learning. The extreme right-wing, fundamentalist, conservative mindset has no interest in coexistence. They want dominion. Beware lest they actually get their hands on the government and put one of their own in the White House. Putting a breastplate on Virtus and eviscerating gay rights would be just the beginning. Instead of excusing and sugar coating the antediluvian mindset of their fellow right-wing and fundamentalist religionists, liberal Christians should keep rubbing conservative noses in their own authoritarianism, so at least maybe the stink won't have a chance to get so dangerously "extreme".

I seen that, and what was funny about his designs is the tyrant wasnt killed, instead he was lounging on his side, perhaps looking up Virtus' skirt.

Two police officers were killed and two more wounded when a routine traffic stop turned violent:

The incident began around 11:36 a.m. (12:36 p.m. ET), when West Memphis patrolman Bill Evans made a traffic stop on a white minivan traveling eastbound on I-40 at Airport Road, said Bill Sadler, public information officer for the Arkansas State Police...

"It is our belief that Officer Evans was shoved to the ground by one of the suspects in the minivan and gunfire was directed at both officers," Sadler said.

The suspects then fled, driving east in the minivan, leaving one man dead and the other fatally wounded...

About 90 minutes later, a minivan believed to be the one that had been seen leaving the shooting site was spotted in a parking lot of a nearby Wal-Mart, Sadler said.

There, it was approached by Crittenden County Sheriff Dick Busby and Chief Enforcement Officer W.A. Wren, who were traveling in the same vehicle, he said.

Both men were wounded in a gunbattle initiated by the suspects, who were using a long rifle and a handgun, Sadler said.

Both of the suspects, tentatively identified as 45-year-old Jerry Kane and his 16-year-old son Joseph, were killed in the firefight.

Potok said a check of the Southern Poverty center’s databases found no mention of Kane, but that he clearly was at least influenced by rightwing organizations.

“Without question, Jerry Kane was mouthing some of the core ideas of anti-government, Patriot movement,’’ Potok said. “...Clearly the father was involved in the Patriot movement.’’

Kane and his son, by all accounts, didn't trust the U.S. Government. They didn't respect it, didn't think the laws that apply to the citizens in this country applied to them. They had particular beliefs and habits, like thinking they didn't need driver's licenses.

When those beliefs came into conflict with Officers Paudert and Evans, it was, according to hate group experts and friends of the Kanes, the perfect storm.

"I don't want to kill anybody," Jerry Kane can be heard saying in a video posted on his website. "But if you keep messing with me, that's the way it's going to come out. And if I have to kill one, I'm not going to be able to stop."...

"I think Jerry Kane was very clearly known on the American radical right as a sovereign citizen," says Mark Potok with the Southern Poverty Law Center, a non-profit civil rights agency that tracks hate groups in America. "He was someone who felt the government has no right to issue driver's licenses, to tax people or indeed, to make them subject to most criminal laws."

A U.S. Census worker “had been confronted by residents who pointed a firearm at the worker and said they would not answer any questions and closed the door,” said police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey.

When two male officers arrived, 51-year-old Lionel Patterson answered the door, armed with a handgun, police said.

“As officers were dealing with the male, a female approached the door with a shotgun and ignored officers’ orders to release the weapon. A man that does not return or deny money for his campaign by right-wing racist groups is not a man fit for public office in my opinion.

Janet Napolitano even apologized multiple times to veteran groups. I don't think she should had to but that's the way things go I guess.

If by extremists, you mean people on the fringes with violent tendencies, often conspiracy theorists, yeah, they're plenty scary, whether of Left, Right or religious flavor.

At the same time, let's be careful not to call people extremists just because their opinions or ideologies are not in the mainstream range.

And the main post has been updated with a link to a report on left wing extremism, so now there's no real ground left for that position to stand on... Although I'm sure some will find a way to twist it around. More than likely, any mention of the left wing extremism report will just be swept under the carpet by people who don't like Obama.

I feel very lucky to be living in England. Rarely do I hear of religious extremism from Christianity. Mainly, these days it seems to be the very tiny minority of Sharia law-loving, fundie Muslims.
