  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I liked it initially, but then found out some things he says are not in line with scripture. It seems like a recipe to build a megachurch like he has, and to me that is a little fishy. There's some good things in there though, I like the way he writes. Look up Rick Warren on the web, though, and you'll find out what I mean.

Exactly what I was thinking but you worded it so much better. I may be a bit more sensitive to this issue with my congregation going through some of these "megachurch" changes currently.

Actually Craftygal, I was in a "megachurch" in NC. Average congregation for all 3 services was 1000 people each. But our sunday school was TIGHT.
So a larger church to me in itself is not so much the issue, you can have cliques in small churches too. BTW where are you from? I lived in the south for 12 years or so. AL, GA, and NC. Thank the army for that.:D

Hi Jan! I live in TN, close to the Nashville area. I suppose I should clarify what I meant in my previous post. I'm not totally against megachurches. My problem with Mr. Warren's concepts have to do with trying to change a congregation into a megachurch via being sneaky about it. Or as I've heard it worded by others, keeping the "blue hairs" in the dark and then wham! I don't like the sneaky nature of it.

I am actually in the middle of reading it right now I really enjoy it and I think it is a wonderful book. I think that he has some great ways of living your life for Christ but I think that is really great for new Christians. People who are really understanding what Jesus is all about. He focuses on the important aspects of live that we may not understand or that we may take for granted at times. I am a new born again Christian and I have to say that so far it has really helped me understand why I am here and my purpose in life. I would say that it can only help you than hinder you and it is alway good to read a life changing book. I say GO FOR IT! If you need a prayer partner I would be happy to be your partner.

do you mind if I ask why you felt it was a waste of money?

I didn't find it challenging. It is lots of noise and not much substance.

I prefer to read things that are more challenging. I like Sproul, Piper, MacArthur, Schaeffer, CS Lewis.

I agree with some of the other comments about the book being difficult to test against scripture and not encouraging serious bible study.

This book was written in a manner that isn't likely to offend anyone. Also not likely to help someone who isn't exactly sure what a "relationship with God" is. If you are writing a book about Christian living to a wide audience you ought to take a couple of paragraphs and spell out what you mean when you use the word Christian.

Tim LeHaye did an excellent job of the Left Behind series. I may not agree with his eschatological view, but kudos to him for making sure that an explanation of salvation was included multiple times in every volume.

These are some of the main critiques from this website:

"The Purpose-Driven® Life may contain some helpful, Biblical truths, but it cannot be trusted to lead a believer on a spiritual journey that is completely true and faithful to the Word and will of God. Why? Because Warren often misinterprets Scripture to his own advantage, conjoins untrustworthy, humanistic psychological principles with Biblical truths, minimizes the importance of sound doctrine, deems holiness and biblical separation as less important than love and unity, refers to enemies of the faith as positive contributors to one's spiritual journey and promotes his entire Purpose-Driven® program."

And this is what I had a problem with the most, that I could not keep straight what "my purpose" is supposed to be, with so many different references (i.e. "what God wants most is......").

"The purpose of Warren's book is to answer the age-old question: "What on earth am I here for?" According to Warren, believers have been placed on the earth to fulfill five purposes. He writes, " [God] has clearly revealed his five purposes for our lives through the Bible" (p. 20). These purposes, according to Warren, are to bring enjoyment to God (p. 63), to learn to love others (P. 125), to become like Jesus Christ (p. 17 1), to serve God (p. 23 1) and to fulfill one's mission (p. 28 1). Yet it can be argued that Warren's thesis itself—that these are the believer's five purposes for existence as "clearly revealed" in the Bible—is not entirely consistent with the teaching of Scripture. The Bible only declares one purpose for mankind's existence: to glorify God. This is man's purpose. From the beginning of a believer's spiritual life in Christ until he is with Jesus Christ forevermore, he is to live "to the praise of [Christ's] glory" (Eph. 1:6, 12, 14). Throughout all eternity God's children will glorify Him (Rev. 4:11). Because the believer is "bought with a price," he is commanded to "glorify God in [his] body, and in [his] spirit" (1Cor. 6:19-20). This is man's sole purpose and reason for existence."

These quotes were from just one of many different articles critiquing this book.

I always want to be careful that I do not tear down a work that God is doing through a brother or sister. I believe that Warren is laboring for the glory of God. However, I do think we all need to be careful in our use of God's Word. When we use various Bible versions there is a temptation to use the wording that bests supports our point of view rather than the one that best reflects the author's and God's original intent. I never did finish this book because I did get the feeling that the numerous versions were used to support his ideas rather than acurately reflect original intent.
