Return of the King Extended Edition DVD!!!

It's the smartest marketing I've seen. If it wasn't worth it, no one would buy it. Those $5.50 DVDs at Walmart could try to do the same thing, but even with the extras, no one would buy them. I will be happy with my "Ultra Super Duper Mega" Extended Directors Cut once it's released. Who knows, maybe I will be independently wealthy when the next version comes out and buy it too. :)

The sad thing is, in a few years they are releasing the Ultra Super Duper Mega Extended Directors Cut Editions with even more footage. :\ Can u say "greed"?

They may, but I can't bring myself to think that the EEs are driven exclusively by greed. I mean, Peter Jackson and company have had to fight the studio tooth and nail to keep their films roughly in tact, and even then I think, especially in the Two Towers, that too much was cut for time concerns. Perhaps it will devolve into pure greed, but I think the first round of EEs is yielding better films than the theatrical cuts.

Or perhaps my faith in humanity is still too much. ;)

I agree with Jon.

I don't know if it is all about greed. When you watch these EE, you can just see how much PJ loves these movies.

And as long as I am enjoying watching the EE, why not buy it and enjoy it?

I can't wait! I'm excited! I'll get it for Christmas! :D

I've bought the other two extended editions, and I've been hanging out for the return of the king... but I wonder if they'll release some kind of box set with pretty art which will make everyone who bought the two extended editions individually all jealous and stuff...

I like the extended editions. I didn't buy the original ROTK yet because I'd rather have the extended version. ROTK seems...incomplete...without some extra scenes they cut (you can't just have Saruman disappear from the movie. You can't!) Although there was a lot of stuff I wish they would edit from it.

The EEs have nothing to do with greed. Peter Jackson is a big Tolkien lover and he was disappointed that he had to cut so much in the theatrecal versions. He made EE versions because he knows that this way, he can give to those who want to pay a little extra, even more of his love of the movies.

And Princess_Ballet is utterly right when she says PJ fought tooth and nail. He deserves a overwhelming amount of applause for his work.

As for me though, I'm going to get the Platnum Series edition with the bonus 5th DVD and the official WETA Workshop's Minas Tirith statuette along with the EE version!

Dec. 14 is when the EE is being released, but you can pre-order it now (I think). All of the information is at lordoftherings.net. I can't wait to get the EE of ROTK!!!!! I've already waited too long for it!
