There is certain language that is offensive particularly of the 4 letter varitey that I have a right not to have to hear in a public place. Has nothing to do with being a Conservative, which if you have read any of my posts on this board, I could hardly be called. :D It has to do with decency as described by just about anyone.

Yeah, I can vouch for her.... she definitely isn't a conservative. ;)

If I had gone to see Eddie Murphy in concert, or Lenny Bruce, or George Carlin, I would certainly expect that they would use language that most would deem offensive, but in a public place, especially where there are young children around, like a resturant or store, we do have a right not to have to listen to it. If I politely ask them to stop, they should be polite enough to respect that.

To me its not even a question of a "right"... its simply about being respectful and decent. If anyone in public was spouting off four-letter words in front of my children (not that I have any), I would first ask them to stop and if they didn't I'd go "retiree" on them. ;)

Hmm let's see, foul language vs assault. Oh yeah, let's applaud the ol coot. Don't think so.

I agree, I don't like to hear it either, but the old guy's response was NOT ok.
I totally agree. The old guy was not right in what he did. He had no right to go and practically assault the younger guy. He could easily have notified an employee but he failed to do so and took the matters into his own hands. The old guy definitely gets no applause from me and it saddens me that he gets applause from anyone.

Agreed! I've got two young boys and many times I've politely asked teenagers to cool their language in public places around them. Can't really blame the teenagers too much, because often that's the language they hear their parents using at home...or on the phone! Our society has just lost all respect for each other...this is really what it's all about.

Will you please explain to me how it is okay and biblical to assault someone for cussing, and finding this action amusing? WWJD?

I have to agree with Akasa and Holly. It is disturbing to me that someone would think assaulting another because of foul language would rectify the situation. What does that teach our children? That if they don't get their way, they can just assault someone? If it were me, I'd remove my children from the situation or try and ignore it the best I could. My children know right from wrong and when I'm found in this situation, my children know that what they're hearing is "bad". I agree that it is and then praise them that I'm proud that they do not use the same language.

Not to go down the race road, but I think being offended by language (the N word) versus actual assult (beating someone up for it) the person in the right is the person using offensive language.

Hey reactionaries,, how many of you would cheer a black man beating up a guy for using racially insensative language? Seriously, I'd like to know...

That said, I don't give the emotional weight to "cuss" words that some people do and while I avoid them around people who might get upset at my using them, do salt up my language sometimes as a verbal bolding or underline.

That further said, I can't help but love the thought of some old coot punching out a young punk. The paragon of this sort of encounter was when that player whose name I don't remember rushed the mound to attack Nolan Ryan and wound up smacked down and embarassed for hit efforts. The difference in this case being the older man attacking the younger... but still.

(Oh, and I abhor needless violence, just in case I'm not making that clear)

Look, nobody's saying what the old guy did was "right" or legal. Yeah there are proper steps you can take. It's just........karma.......or turnabout......or whatever you'd like to call it. It's like watching a guy walk into a power poll as he flips you off. I would bet most normal people would be thinking "way to go old man" and "uh oh - old guy's gonna be in trouble now" simultaneously. M

I don't know what a power poll is, but I am just dissapointed to see christians cheer this behavior at all. I don't think it is very christian behavior.

You can disagree, but I would hope you would understand my point of view. As a new christian, I don't like to see this vengeance.

Yes a telephone pole is what he is refering to. Without actually have been there its hard to get an idea of what exactly happened. I am very big on being against censorship, but then again I support parents having the ability to control what their children are exposed to, so I'm a little torn on the issue, though I sway in favor of the guy on the phone.

If his intellegence is any indication of his manners however, I can't help but be amused by the fact that this old guy attacked him. Not something I would condone, but something I would find amusing.

I have to agree somewhat. The younger generation, for the most part, doesn't find swearing to be offensive. All of my friends and I swear all the time, we don't think anything of it. My parents swear quite a bit too. As does most of my family and family friends. My parents every once in a while make a half hearted attempt to scold me for swearing (even though I really don't swear much around them) but I just point that that my mom just said "I'm so f***** tired of this s****" (usually in reference to her job) and they leave me alone. It's just not a big deal to a good amount of people.

No...you don't have a right to not hear foul language in a public place. See...your rights end where my nose begins. I have the right to say whatever I wish in public so long as it doesn't cause real harm (e.g., yelling "Fire" in crowded theater, libel, etc.).

but in a public place, especially where there are young children around, like a resturant or store, we do have a right not to have to listen to it. If I politely ask them to stop, they should be polite enough to respect that.

In a public place, you have no right to stop someone else's freedom of speech. Restaurants and stores are not "public" though. The staff can toss people out if they so desire.

With attitudes like this people wonder why parents try and isolate their kids from the "real world"...

You know what...I would hope that you would have enough respect for me and others to keep your foul language to yourself. <decided to not pull punches on this one...sorry guys>
