Which do you desire more from the people around you ?

If you can only have one, which is more inportant to you...that people like you or that they respect you?


I will vote that I need respect the most. I have no desire to be around people that like me but have no respect for my opinions or intelligence. A good friend just said he'd rather have people like him. (Conversation came from a comment he made that I think showed how little respect he has for me after all. I am rethinking our friendship if this is really his opinion of me. )

Respsect becuase the bible says "woe unto you when all speak well of you for so did their fathers to false prophets". If everyone likes you you're not preaching the gospel. But if your enemies at least respect you or recognize that you're a hard one to sway then you're doing things right. Cause maybe they don't like you...but they at least respect...they at least acknowledge that hey..that guy isn't an easy guy to bring down.

No i am not loved by everyone in this world..

But i am Loved by God and one day when i enter into eternity with Him i will have many brothers and sisters who will love me, In numbers too big to count

what about with your friends

That's a good question with that one it's half and half.

God ministered to me about this subject recently and certain people I used to be close with before being saved I have slowly drifted away from becuase they are too far off when it comes to belief wise for me to be close to them anymore. Christianity is now a priority and it's hard to be close with someone who doesn't at least believe in God at least and even if they are at least there...if they aren't saved like me...or doing things for God I can't talk to them about certain things.

I can't talk to them about who God is or sin, or the bible, or a christian life and I find my new closest friends have been christians. But here's where the like comes in, they also are my friends because they like me.

A friend is someone you don't just respect but you like, it's different then just a generic person or someone you know. You like things about them such as their integrity, personality, spiritual life etc so because you like/approve of them they are your friends. But because they respect you and you them they are your close friends as well.

So it's 50/50 you want friends to respect you as a christian, but you also want them to like you as well because likeability is a need in any friendship.

Otherwise each relationship that one has runs the risk of being dysfunctional and/or toxic (this includes family as well as friends).

If there is not a basic "respect", no genuinely healthy relationship can develop.

I actually want people in general to respect me as a person...and since I am a Christian, that means that too. I'd rather be respected at work than liked. I find that liked usually follows but my feelings aren't hurt if someone doesn't really like me. My job in life isn't to make friend but rather to make a difference.

yep and true friends what I was trying to say respect and like you and stick with you on what you believe. The ones that are just "friends" or people you talk to you aren't able to talk to God about really and you don't get that close with often.

Well I can respect LeBron James as a player but not like him. I can respect a president but not like him either

I know many people that I like as people but have no respect for. I wouldn't trust them but that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy being around them...they may tell funny stories or just have brilliant thoughts and ideals. And as long as I am not dependent on them, yeah, I can like them.

I guess I think in terms of being wanted in the sense that they want to be with me. If they don't want to hang out with me then I wouldn't expect them to be around beyond a hi when we see each other.

So you are okay if one of your friends enjoys your company and thinks you are funny...partially because he thinks you are a bit dim-witted and he finds that humorous. You are the fodder for his jokes at work on Monday morning. Yes, he likes you...no he has no respect for you or your feelings.

I've never really cared much about what other say about me. I think I was a teen when I new their words didn't change who I was inside and I knew I liked being with myself.
