respect and virginity
I really dont, believe virgins are, more respected. I really dont, feel a strong desire, to remain a virgin, for my wedding night. Because I really dont, feel that marriage is important, in the modern world. Virginity really isnt, important, because there really isnt, many good reason, for a person to remain, a virgin. I really dont, intend to remain, a virgin. A person really shouldnt, remain a virgin, because I just dont, feel a relationship between, respect and virginity.

I still feel like the "no sex before marriage" rule came about because there was no way to avoid having a child, and children before marriage is an actual issue. Now that we have contraception it seems rather moot.

I'm actually fairly certain it came about because woman used to be treated as property, and an unused item is worth more than an used one. (talking about ancient Hebrews here)

Although combating the spread of STDs might also have had something to do with it. A lot of the rules in Leviticus might seem ridiculous nowadays, but many actually are reasonably good attempts at preventing the spread of diseases etc (for such a "primitive" people).

Unwanted children might also have played a role, but a lesser one I think. AFAIK, woman were expected to start producing babies as soon as they reached fertility. If you had sex before marriage, the man was just forced to buy the woman ("you break it, you buy it", Deut 22:28-29, amongst others) and continue making babies with her. Nowadays there's such a concept as woman not wanting to have babies yet because they want to have a career etc. That wasn't an option back when the Bible was being written.

There are many reasons why God put the restriction on human sexuality. I can list a few here:
1. STD's (as already mentioned)
2. An emphasis on family (having the parents of children committed enough to marry and stay together for life, at the time under penalty of death).
3. The concept of marriage being a picture for us of God's relationship with His chosen people (see the writings of Paul and Hosea).

I'll also say that it takes a lot of courage and conviction to remain a virgin until marriage in today's culture. That level of perseverance *should* be respected.

Whether virginity gets or deserves respect or scorn depends on whose opinion you are asking.

Generally speaking virginity is now associated with the inablity to get laid. Thus your laughed at for that inablity.(a childish reason but yeah.)

I do not think people are laughing when they realize it is a concious decision. Provided they believe this concious decision is not practically enforced by the inability to get laid.

Also what on earth is a 'shack up honey' ?

Contraception has existed for thousands of years. They had contraception even back in the days of Pharoah. People were never totally ignorant about fertility.

We should do a poll on respecting commas I about went nuts trying to read the OP.

But I find it strange that women get labelled as "sad" for being a virgin. You think it would be seen diffirently for women.

If the entire point was just to lose ones virginity then im sure the nearest hobo would be happy to help. Funny though thats generally not the only thing thats involved. An atleast semi attractive mate seems to be in order.

To "shack up" has for years in the US meant to cohabitate w/o marriage.

To an extent- you're correct. I think it was poor phrasing, myself. It is worth noting that there are people out there who don't feel self-righteous- but do see the habit of giving of oneself sexually as self-destructive. Not to mention, there are many non-religious individuals who feel that a person (usually a woman) isn't worthy of respect if they're easy. I also think there are serious self-esteem issues involved when a person is constantly trying to find the cure for what ails them by seeking sex- especially without the intent of a serious relationship. Our culture has seemingly made sex a very casual thing- and I think it is very sad to see.

ETA: One need only to look at young teens who engage in sex acts with each other. It usually becomes about a way to seek the love they don't get at home- so they seek it with anyone willing. Then, sometimes you see boys being abusive and controlling of girls (and even other boys)- and they're all physically attached to the boy and 'love' him and they give him something they think is special- only to be ditched later. Then they all move on to seek 'love' with the next one willing and become hardened and more desensitized. I see it played out all the time- and it is heart-breaking to watch- especially when their parents don't care. Losing one's innocence only to become quickly jaded is one of the most depressing things on this planet- and watching those kids who want to hold onto that being ridiculed and bullied for being virgins is even worse. Try consoling a girl who's crying over not being understood by her friends- because she doesn't want to have sex, she's not gay, and she's tired of her friends telling her they'll change her mind and make her gay- and telling her nobody can make another person gay doesn't help the situation- it's not what this new generation believes.
