  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I saw this topic in News & Current Events and I was wondering if some of you would check it out and comment. It looked like it was going to become a battle over there and I don't really want anyone's opinion oither than a Catholic view. So, Protestants need not reply.

I will review this thread, but I will not post anything other than questions.

Mel says his wife is going to hell?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4224452/

Mel Gibson has come under fire for being hard on Jews in his film “The Passion of the Christ” — but apparently, he feels that Protestants are also doomed to damnation. In fact, it looks like Gibson, a conservative Catholic, believes that his Episcopalian wife could be going to hell.

Gibson was interviewed by the Herald Sun in Australia, and the reporter asked the star if Protestants are denied eternal salvation. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Gibson replied. “I believe it.”

He elaborated: “Put it this way. My wife is a saint. She’s a much better person than I am. Honestly. She’s, like, Episcopalian, Church of England. She prays, she believes in God, she knows Jesus, she believes in that stuff. And it’s just not fair if she doesn’t make it, she’s better than I am. But that is a pronouncement from the chair. I go with it.”

First of all the columnist Jeanette Walls who is on the byline of the story is a Gossip columnist. Secondly, a search of the Herald Sun (the "source" of this story) has no article related to this at all. Thirdly, they will put out all the stop to slander Mel Gibson and this movie.

Is it true? I have no idea. But I have serious doubts about its truthfulness.

Mel is great in his field. This movie is going to be a phenomenon - it will save many souls.

But Mel is no theologian. He is very influenced by his father, who belongs to a very right-wing group of people who seem to believe that they are more Catholic than the Pope.

To say that nonCatholics can't enter heaven is blaphemy. It offends against the sanctity of God, who cannot be unjust.

If....IF he said it....then he needs to check his catechism because he is wrong. Secondly I cannot see him pronoucing such a judgement on his wife and other non-Catholics.

On the positive side...I cannot wait to see the movie and see the power of the Holy Spirit to change lives through viewing this movie.

Now, if Mel said this, and he believes that, what he fails to realize is that by baptism, the Catholic Church considers all Christians to be a part of the Church. There are varying degrees of intimacy with the Church (some are separated, some are not) but all properly baptised individuals are a part of Jesus' Church.

So, on one hand he is right... there is no salvation outside the Church. But how he's interpreted that is different than how it was intended, and how it's interpreted by the very Church who made that pronouncement.

Mel Gibson has said on his live interview this year (which aired on EWTN) that he is not a theologian or a preacher. So, *if* he said such a thing, and *if* he meant it in the way the article's author implies, then he is wrong.
And he never said that he was right.

I hope this issue comes up next Monday when Diane Sawyer's one-on-one interview with Mr. Gibson airs in primetime on "Primetime."

Thanks for that heads up Kenny. I don't watch a lot of primetime tv, so I wouldn't have known about this otherwise. I hope it doesn't tick me off. Secular tv (as it applies to the news)-- usually does. :)

Gabriel-

I echo what has already been said...plus, I am amazed at the lengths that Satan is going to malign this movie. It just won't stop...first it was accusations of anti-semitism, then it was charges of commericialization of the Gospel, now it is trying to split Protestants and Catholics even more.

Jesus wasn't kidding when He warned that Satan had demanded to shift us like wheat.

On a side note, my roommate (who is a practicing Baptist -- even though he practices "other things" I'm sure his pastor wouldn't approve of) told me two nights ago, "Did you hear the actor who's playing Jesus in that movie got struck by lightning when they filmed it? Talk about God telling them, 'Don't make this movie!'"

I shook my head in disbelief.
