Replacement theology? . . .what is it?

It's a term generally used to refer that the Christian Church has effectively "replaced" the Jews as God's chosen people, right?

As a Pentecostal I never understood the "separation" of today, and that modern Israel is somehow special and holy, and deserving of Christian defense.

The obsession has always annoyed me, and my pastor doesn't ever neglect to refer to it.

yeah, I think you are right. God's chosen are those who follow Him, which today would be the Church. Christ saying that God could raise up stones as children of Abraham, and the Scripture saying that the city Christ was crucified in is as to Sodom and Egypt kinda dashes the thought that the Jews are still Israel.

Barnabas, in his epistle, also confirmed it.

Those are great verses. I'd never seen them that way before. But the Parable of the Wicked Husbandmen certainly clinches it. Even long before I became a Christian, with a little familiarity with the Old Testament, I could read that parable and immediately see what was being said.

I don't see how you can read the 8th chapter of Hebrews and come away, as a Christian, believing that the old covenant is still in effect. Jesus says the same thing in the Parable of the Winepress in Mark Chapter 12:

During my time in spiritual limbo in the woebegone days of old, that obsession is the exact reason why (among others) that I could not allow myself to become a Protestant.

I mean if the modern-day State of Israel is supposed to be the same Israel of David and Solomon and so forth; than why are non-Israelis being treated in a similar fashion as the blacks during Apartheid in South Africa and the Jews in Hitler's time? Kind of a bad fruit of someone's labor if you ask me.

I know precisely what you mean. "Good Protestants" are supposed to fawn and rejoice over the State of Israel because it is the land of God's "chosen people" and if we don't do all we can to embrace them, support them, etc, then we are in God's disfavor and he will curse us for it. I've gotten the uneasy perception that some believe that the Jews can be saved simply by living out their religion - as in, being good Jews, which is an astonishing - and clearly heretical - thought.

I think that if God intended for the Jews to continue being the chosen people to lead the world to him, then I don't think he would have needed the second covenant and the arrival of Jesus Christ. He could have just sent someone to "wake" the Jews from their spiritual weakness at that point in history.

They also tie in Israel with End Times theology as well, which is one of the principal reasons why they continue to support Israel. Some "Christian Zionists" - as they're sometimes referred - are radical enough to literally donate money for the restoration of the temple in Jerusalem. Christians in Israel are routinely harassed and all are barred from evangelism and reaching out to non-Christians, with some cases of attacks.

It drives me nuts.

As many as have been, baptized into Christ, have put on Christ! Alleluia!
-Paschal Hymn

The Church is the new "Israel." It is not our race, nationality, or allegiance to a flag that marks us as part of "Israel" but rather our baptismal gown.

This is what makes us heirs to the kingdom; not our passport.
