Repeat after me

When did those that now use the "Repeat after me" prayer way of salvation begin the practice and what was the movement that caused method? Early American Baptist preachers such as Spurgeon, Christmas Evans and others clearly had a peirod of deep conviction of their sins and the old-time hearth felt salvation. There is no early records indicating a repeat-a-prayer and now the preacher says you are saved now lets put your name on the roll and fill up the collection plate.

It comes from the idea that new believers might not know how to pray to God or how to accept God's free gift of salvation. It's intent is perfectly innocent and not at all intended to demean or debase God, the church or the Believers.

Very true lambslove. Almost a year ago I was a new Christian, and I didn't know a lot. This type of "prayer" helped me a lot.

Good post ... the devil uses this pray in lots of diffrent ways. No man can tell another man how to pray only God teaches us how to pray.

I agree, but it goes further than just that. Many a people have been led to a false since of security not only because of the prayer they said and the pat on the back, but also because once the prayer is said and baptism has been done, that's it. I've been to a lot of churches and one thing that I've noticed is that the new believer doesn't get much at all in the way of a continued education. They said their prayer and that was enough for everybody.

When someone says that prayer for the first time doesnt necessarily mean they become a christian (I think). I mean, I said that prayer in yr5. But I din't become a christian for another 3 years... it was all head knowledge, and not a relationship with christ. The day I persued that relationship and put my faith and trust in Him 100% is the day I became a christian...
