Rep. Steve King—the Iowa Republican congressman whose record of racist, inflammatory rhetoric came to a head last month amid revelations that he’d recently met with an Austrian political party with historical Nazis connections—is suddenly less than thrilled to be linked to white nationalism.

During a candidate forum in Des Moines Thursday, King became increasingly agitated after a participant recalled an incendiary 2017 tweet from the congressman that stated, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies”—remarks King double-downed on despite widespread condemnation. The audience member began to draw a comparison between King’s tweet and the xenophobic social media posts by the suspected shooter in Saturday’s Pittsburgh synagogue massacre. “You and the shooter both share an ideology that is fundamentally anti-immigration,” the participant said.

“Do not associate me with that shooter,” King said angrily. “I knew you were an ambusher when you walked in the room, but there is no basis for that, and you get no questions, and you get no answers.”

The heated exchange continued, as the participant asked what qualities might distinguish King’s views from that of the shooter’s. “But do you identify as a white supremacist?” he asked.

“Stop it!” King shouted.

“Then why did you meet with a white supremacist organization in Austria?”

“You’re done,” King said, before telling security to remove the questioner.

The tense moment comes as King faces an unexpectedly tough challenge to his re-election bid as controversy builds over his rhetoric.
Steve King Loses It After Being Asked If He Identifies as a White Supremacist

Congressman Steve King’s recent comments, actions, and retweets are completely inappropriate. We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior.

Stivers, BTW, is the chairman of the GOP congressional campaign committee. They just cut off any aid to King.
It's too late now. They knew what he was but as long as it was kept quiet, oh well.

I think originally, the republicans felt as though they could handle those guys and just use them. Now they are starting to own the party. May be too late to do anything about it; they can no longer win without them.

To say that we can't restore our civilization with other beliefs, like Sharia Law, isn't a white supremacist opinion; it's a fact. Our civilization is based on Enlightenment era ideals of liberty, not throwback Islamic beliefs from the 6th century. Why do think that stating the obvious is racist?

I notice that our civilization is markedly less violent, less bigoted, and more secure than it was just a few decades ago. You want to go back to more violence? You want racial segregation? You want shorter and less healthy lives? For what purpose?

Our civilization is based on Enlightenment era ideals of liberty, not throwback Islamic beliefs from the 6th century.

It's based on the idea that all men are created equal, that religious freedom is a fundamental right, and that the government is not a weapon for cultural war. It's just government. It has no religious function, as the founders declared.

A man who collaborates with neo-Nazis, and shares their statements and ideals is not a man who has any connection at all to the Enlightenment.

During a recent trip to Europe, King met with members of a far-right Austrian party founded by a former Nazi SS officer and gave an interview to their website in which he discussed the “Great Replacement,” a white supremacist conspiracy theory.
...
King has explicitly tried to rope them in with him, saying of the far-right groups he met with: “If they were in America pushing the platform that they push, they would be Republicans.”
Rep. Steve King Has Made Controversial Remarks for Years. Why He's Suddenly in Trouble Now

Sad thing is, he's right. Nazis in America are now republicans. But not all republicans are nazis. And they might yet prevail.

Why do think that stating the obvious is racist?

Paranoid fantasies about being replaced by Jews or Hispanics are not obvious truths. They are just foolish racist beliefs.

The Dalai Lama recently said that Europe belongs to Europeans; that the refugees from the Middle East should only stay there temporarily. You can read about it here: Dalai Lama to refugees: ‘Europe belongs to the Europeans’

Do you think the Dalai Lama is a white supremacist, neo-Nazi, or fascist?

In 1935 Sinclair Lewis in It Can't Happen Here wrote, "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross."

It's been here for a while now.

You’re a Christian, so why are you associating other Christians with fascism? Galatians 3:28 says that we’re all equal regardless of our ethnic background or gender, which is to say that any Christian who doesn’t adhere to this ideal isn’t following what the Bible teaches. So again, how can you associate Christianity with fascism, especially when you’re a Christian yourself?

For the simple reason that there are Christians who are fascists or simply are unaware just how unChristian fascism actually is. In 1930 Germany was arguably the most Christian country in the world and look what happened.

What if there were a self-described Christian who became a serial killer and began killing prostitutes, murdering 30 of them before he was caught by police. Would you consider him a genuine Christian in the first place? Exodus 20:13 says, “thou shalt not kill.” For this reason, I wouldn't think a serial killer could be a true Christian in the first place. Likewise, you can’t have such a thing as a neo-Nazi or fascist Christian, because they wouldn’t be real Christians in the first place. Do you disagree? Why or why not?

This is the "no true Scot argument" and I find it quite problematic. People of any religion or philosophy can be deluded but that does not mean to me that they thereby cease being Christian or Muslim or whatever. I have even heard strong Christians argue "No true Christian could ever do such an evil thing" but if a Muslim were to do the same thing they would say "Well, that is exactly what Muslims do"

Exodus 20:15 says, "thou shalt not steal." If a self-described Christian works as a professional thief and makes millions of dollars a year fencing stolen goods, tell me why he is a genuine Christian. The Scotsman fallacy doesn't apply here. If you think otherwise, explain your position.

Except to point out that Christian theologians are unable to come to concensus over the issue.

I'm not going to click a link when the poster doesn't even bother to provide a brief synopsis of its contents.

The question is why people who claim to be Christians are associating with fascism.

The Dalai Lama recently said that Europe belongs to Europeans;

If you agree with him, you should leave this country, unless you're an American Indian. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
