• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

My point is, people come here and ask the questions they do because they want to solve the problem they are having, they don't want to do a total overhaul of their systems, especially with something that has next to no support and is more of a pain than windows to setup and get all the hardware working.
Partly because we feel the question has already been answered, so the thread's been hijacked to make it more fun.

Virus Scanners may be a necessity, but only on suspicious files. Running it on all the time just wastes system resources and causes false positives.
Considering that the average computer user doesn't know what types of files may be suspicious, and that most computers made within the past 3 years have plenty of resources to go around, I think it's safer to recommend running a virus scanner constantly.

On the topic of switching operating systems: those of you recommending a full switch to Linux or Mac are GREATLY overestimating the average user's skills. Learning an entire new system while trying to find compatible software is not something most non-geeks have the time or inclination to do.

I still don't see the big deal with Linux, it doesn't even run half the games Windows uses unless you have some software to manipulate it, now I have used a Mac G5 and its great for Graphics and stuff and if I had the money I would buy that and set up a PC and Mac Studio. But the linux software isn't very feasable, theres a reason why its set up with more servers then with home PC's.

While all 3 of these OS's (there's more, I know) have their good and bad side, it would be good to just keep in focus with the issue at hand. My personal opinion is that if people wanted to inquire about another OS, they would do just that. Most people that are asking for help are not really interested in how 3l33t they would be (or what you think they'd be) if they would switch to using this OS or that OS. They just need a resolution to their problem. Help them if you can or go start a "Which OS is better" thread.

Sorry if that came off a little harsh, but it really needed to be said.

As I have already said, the problem has already been solved, so we've hijacked the thread for our own amusement. Keyword: Hijacked. :)
