• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just wondering if anyone ever has REM Paralysis and if anyone knows what causes it. It's when you're just going to sleep or just waking up and it's like you're awake mentally, but physically you are still asleep and you cannot move. For me, this is frightning when this happens. And sometimes when it has happened, I was unable to both move and breath. Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

My son has the same problem as you - didn't know it was called REM paralysis - I don't know anything about it really so it is going to be interesting to see what comes up.

Hi Space,

I don't know much about it, but it seems to happen to me when I am very over tired. Have you noticed that. I know it's scarey. Try to get your foot on the floor to come out of it. Love, tapero

Sometimes I don't know when it's going to happen. But it's something I just can't help feel anxious about when it's going on. I've even had a loud ringing noise, when it's happened, also.

It's also called Sleep Paralysis and that's more commonly used, I think, than REM Paralysis.

When you dream you are generally paralyzed. This keeps you from getting up and acting out your dream. When you aren't completely awake sometimes the sleep paralysis hasn't released your system yet. They did experiments on cats where they disabled the part of the brain that governs sleep behaviour and the cats would chase things in their sleep, fight with non-existent enemies and eat food that wasn't there. When the sleep center was re-enabled the behaviour stopped.

I suffer from this terrifying disorder several times a year. Here is an explanation I grabbed from wikipedia.com::thumbsup:

"Sleep paralysis occurs during REM sleep in order to prevent the body from manifesting the sleeper's dreams. Little is known about the physiology of sleep paralysis. However, some have suggested that it may be linked to post-sypnaptic inhibition of motor neurons in the pons region of the brain. In particular, low levels of melatonin may stop the depolarization current in the nerves, which prevents the stimulation of the muscles, to prevent the body from enacting the dreamt activity (ie. preventing a sleeper from running when dreaming about running).
There is also a significant positive correlation between those experiencing this disorder frequently and those suffering from narcolepsy. However, various studies suggest that many or most people will experience sleep paralysis at least once or twice in their lives.
Some report that various factors increase the likelihood of both paralysis and hallucinations. These include:
  • Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
  • Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
  • Increased stress
  • Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
  • A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode. Also conscious induction of sleep paralysis is a common technique to enter a state of lucid dreams.
  • Artificial sleeping aids or antihistamines"

This would happen to me all the time as well. When I was younger it would happen almost every morning when my Mum would wake me to get ready for school. We realised that if Mum woke me suddenly I would go into this state - feeling like I was unable to breathe or move. By changing how I would wake up, it stopped the sleep paralysis. I still get it now if the phone rings while I am sleeping, but it no longer scares me, I know that I will be OK, I just need to slowly start trying to move my body.

I get this quite often. As it was quoted by Vahalla, I always find that I have been sleeping on my back. I start calling out for Jesus to help me, and with in seconds I can finally wake up. Your mind knows what is going on, so keep telling yourself to wake up.

HI,
I don't really know if what happens to me is REM P. What happens is very unsettling though. I can't speak at first, or hardly even think or breath. It does usually happen when I'm on my back. I have to first think of my name... which seems hard to do at the time, and then say it. It only lasts just a brief moment but my heart is generally pounding out of my chest and my ears are also ringingand I have to do deep breathing exercises to get back to sleep. I just figured these episodes were just nocturnal panic attacks and that my sleepy state makes it hard for me to think cleary or move when I am awakened by them. I never heard of REM P. before, but if that's what I'm having... oh, well,...so what, I hate the way it feels but it hasn't killed me in well over 26 years.. so I guess it's nothing to fret about.
Blessings,
Mitzi
