As the election nears we are constantly reminded what a prominently charged issue religion is for most Americans. Because of its importance at this time, we are working on a documentary for HBO that seeks to profile new religions in North America. We are interested in talking with charismatic people who have found mainstream religions lacking and have created small communities that reflect their new beliefs. This could be anything from the person who found their Christian church becoming too liberal and thus began a group of their own or the person who discovered they had a profound relationship with God or the Universe and began speaking to others about a completely new approach to spirituality based on this relationship. We are interested in meeting relatively new, small groups. CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

When someone wants to make a documentary on religion, why are charismatics so eagerly saught after? Check NPR's "All things considered" for a recent story on a charismatics and the presidential election.
My opinion: Watching the display of the spiritual gifts is so foreign to most people's way of life that the average unsaved person (and some saved people w/little experience with the gifts) may actually be turned off from further exploration of Christianity.
It's shock media. It's controversial. It looks 'funny' to those who don't understand what's going on and most importantly - it represents ONLY ONE ASPECT of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit in Christians today.
