Hmmmm. I would have jumeped at that opportunity a couple of years ago. Now when someone say the term religious art I stop and think about what that actually means and what my motifs would be for creating this kind of art. I read this book called "Imagine" by steve turner and it has kind of chsnged my view on art a bit. It's really a wonderful book for artists. Sorry sister (laushe6) I'm not sure their would be too much you could get out of the book cause it is primarily about visual art and musical art.
Basically the guy talks about the need for good "christian art" that expresses the world through the eyes of a christian. We really do see the world differently as christians and it is our job to show that kind of vision to people the way all of the leaders in the bible showed Gods visions to the israelites, and the early christians. The world is tired of hearing the same old christian lyrics where each song seems to have to include the name of JEsus like a gazillion times. The world has seen all of the scenes in the bible illustrated to represent them in realistic manners. we need to break away from this and really make a statement that people won't stop listening to the moment it has started because they feel like they have already heard it. We can be CHristian and artists whithout ever having painted Jesus on the cross or haivng made an exsplicitly christian song.
It's not that these things are wrong. I actually have plenty of paintings with religious content. I'm actually working on this really huge painting right now of the catholic cathedral that I can see from the porch of my apartment. ( I'm basically doing it to learn three point perspective better before my senior year in art college. The question is more about why we are creating the art. IF it's to evengelize then we need to think through christian minds about how to have a christian perspective that will reach non christian minds. I'm sorry I know you called this religious art so you may not necisarilly be talking just about chritianity. If you are making ar tfor the love of it or for a particualr religious organization or even if you just feel pulled to illustrate a scene from the bible then that is fine. THese are just my opinions and some ideas I have gotten from the book.
With that all said, I would be very interested in posting some of my religious art that I have done. Sorry about all that rambeling, I just wanted to throw that out there cause it's stuff I allways have to think about in my art a public art college.
In Christ,
Matthew
