  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Morally corrupt? That's a heavy conviction... Though I don't see really how they are.... Even more so in today's world. Now I don't want to sound as though I'm blending with the world on any level, because I'm not. But moral corruption in today's world is a good bit different.. As see in movies like Kill Bill ect. Now if you were from the good old days, they would seem down right vulger, but times have changed.....

I said they appear that way. Not that they are. But appearence is what non-Christians are looking at. So some of the things I listed about them concern me.

You must disagree with dating and such... Which a partially agree with you there (personally I don't date)... But the song isn't made to permote dating and dancing or they would have put more.. It's mroe for fun...

I do and I don't agree with dating and the like. Yes, I'm against any relationship based on looks and someone's social skills alone. And yes, the song is mostly for fun. I realize that. But, we need to be careful with "just for fun" songs. Music, and the lyrics in music, no matter how silly or dumb they may seem at times, do affect us.

A Christian band, and Christian songs means that they both honor and lift up Christ... Then a guess there are really only a few Christian bands or songs... But then alos, that's a lot on what you think, though I don't condemn you for it...

I don't have a problem with non-Christian songs on a CD done by Christians. Really, I don't. I do have a problem however when they toss a Christian worldview outa the lyrics completely. That's where I start to worry.

As GivingMyAll4Him pointed out, "Sadie Hawkins Dance" is played all over the secular radio stations, and gets non-Christians listening to Relient K's other songs that have Christian messages in them. I think that's great. But I don't think they needed to toss in the stupid reason the girl took the signer to the dance. Look at Switchfoot. They don't do stuff like that, yet they have several songs that are wildly popular amongst non-Christians.

As I said in my first post, I do love many of their songs. I'm not against Relient K. I am however concerned with some of the things I listed above.

YOU may disagree with relationships based on looks and social skills alone, but that doesn't mean that most girls who asked guys to the Sadie Hawkins Dance do. Even girls who ask Christian guys.

So if say to you that SoAndSo asked SuchAndSuch to the SD dance because he's a hottie and a smooth talker, does that make me morally corrupt?

I'm with Osmaker... I personally really REALLY enjoy some of RK's songs... but in my opinion, if you are a dead on Christian rock band..and you start making new stuff that has less and less about God and more and more about whatever songs...I see a decline. I have seen this with other bands...It kinda scares me, and I wonder how long RK will go before they make an album that doesn't have anything to do with God, just songs that are fun and cool and things about whatever. And then when they are on MTV and are asked, are you a 'Christian Rock Band'? and they reply, 'Well, we are 'Christians, and we have a band, but we are not really a 'Christian rock band'', once again this is just my opinion and I am kinda shooting from the hip, so I'm sure there are flaws in it all.
But in a nutshell, you are a solid all for Christ band, start making less Praise and more whatever songs, and you will soon become a 'rock band that is with Christian members'.
Another point though, with the pressing on vid, yes there are some girls that are far from modest, BUT there is one part that is encouraging...when the girl is walking all sexy to the members as they walk to the building, and they just walk by her without even giving her a GLANCE! now that is nice. and I think that was the point, they were walking and 'pressing on' and nothing was going to stop them on there walk.
I truely hope that is the case, cause they have some wonderful insight, and a lot of talent.

i get what you're saying with the whole "if they keep making more whatever songs they'll turn into a band w/ christian members", but were you talking about the "two lefts dont make a right..." cd? because there are only a few that are whatever songs.. well... it depends on how you look at them, but i mean, even the gibberish song has some meaning... maybe i'm just weird, but i think it's talking about how people stay stupid stuff to their friends ("hey homey!" etc.) that their friends either don't understand, or don't care about, and the song tells you "hey, make some sense". i don't know, maybe that's just my catch on it all, so i'll shut up now. :)

Hey all. I'm a newcomer and I am actually from the Relient K boards. I've been there a year and a half. I see completely what you guys are talking about because we bring it up a lot. When I previewed Two Lefts via Ecard I made a thread expressing my dissapointment that there were so few songs on there that were actually about God. My opinion of the band has changed...it's been a while since I've talked to the guys themselves. Their popularity has started to steer their direction, sadly.

I, too, love relient k! They are my absolute favorite band! I've seen them twice (in concert), as well, and they are the greatest! They came to town last Nov.. While I was sitting in the food court at the mall, one night after church, I glanced up and saw Brian and Matt H. I almost peed my pants. It was SO funny.. So my friend and I walked past them and smiled. Then we passed them again later on (no, we weren't stalking them..hehe) After the concert the next day, I was getting autographs and whatnot and I went up to Matt H. and asked him if he remembered us from the mall. He said "oh my gosh, i was gonna say something at the concert, but Matt wouldn't shut up." I was surprised they remembered us! Anyways, that's my great encounter with relient k! YAY!!

i love relient k. i've been to 2 concerts and i got to meet brian and matt t. it totally rocked. one of my BEST FRIENDS got me a drumstick and even got it signed.
relient k has more then just 2 songs... i think they 3 or 4 Christian songs on the new CD....

well, i consider all their songs witty. they're very good with their lyrics. i enjoy their worship songs. the whole idea about worshipping God and still having fun is so awesome. i think it's a great way to lead people to Christ.

I saw their music video. It wasn't that bad.
Realize, the skimpy girls were distractions that they "pressed through". They represented temptation. Everything was symbolic of something.

I don't believe it was just because of their fans that they turned down the offer from Abercrombie. Think about it though...lots and lots of money would have been theirs, yet they turned it down to follow God and His purposes. What could be wrong with that?

Who doesn't like guys that are smooth and good with talking? For something as trivial as a Sadie Hawkins dance, I think it's fine to ask someone based soley on their smoothness and how good they are with talking. Just so long as you don't mess anything up at the dance that will effect you in the long run, what does it matter?

I'm all for Relient K. They used to be my favorite band. I remember their third CD really speaking to me. At first I didn't like it, but the songs like "Forward Motion" or the other spiritual ones totally related to where I was in life, and it helped me a lot.

That's all I have to say.
