Our church is having a Reformation day celebration, which will include booths and games of the Renaissance period. Our pastor said we can bring in "relics" everyday items and could use our imagination to say for ex. bringing in a dead fly (eww) came from an Egyptian blanket.

What can I possibly bring, and what could it represent? Also, we don't have any costumes. They don't want us to wear Halloween-ish costumes ex. medieval ones. So what could we wear?
We are new to the PCA, so we don't have any experience in this.
thanks
Jan

That sounds really fun! Have you ever been to a Renaissance Faire? They wear "Renaissance" style clothing. Last year, we went to one of these faires and we dressed up, but had to resort to stuff in our closet. Here's what I wore:

a long skirt, in a dark color; a blouse with ruffles, lace, worn on top of the skirt; a thick leather belt on top of the blouse; a tiny purse (more like a pouch) hung from the belt; boots.

Look at some patterns in fabric store, under costumes, and glean some ideas from there. My costume wasn't exactly renaissance, but it served its purpose.

Pirates were abundant in that time period. Just have fun with it!

Relics? Hmmm.........how about a skull of John the Baptist as a young boy (one of my favorite relics --hahaha)?

I'm joining my PCA church this Sunday. And, I've threatened to dress as the Pope in celebration of Reformation day. Wouldn't that be a riot: "Pope joins PCA!!! Repents of Catholicism and leaves largest Christian denomination rudderless."

Still, they are a fairly tame bunch and might not see the humor in that, even if I got the idea directly from the teaching elder. I might need to let them get accustomed to me for a while before I unleash my full personality on them. I've only been attending for 5 weeks.

We have had Reformation Day celebrations for years at my church. they are always fun.

Relics? You have some good suggestions already. You could bring an old bone (chicken, cow, etc...) and say it is from Saint so-in-so. The period was ripe with saint bones. They had lot's more bones for certain saints than that saint could possibly have had. In old rusty nail from the cross would be good. Christ robe is also good. Some hair from the young colt that brought Jesus to Jerusalem, the possibilities are endless.

Have fun.
In Christ,
Kenith

LOL!! Do you have a pope costume?

The hitch in my giddy-up. I'm just Calvinist cheap enough (read "Dutch") that I'm not eager to rent one. Besides, I value my life and I'm a very deep sleeper next to my wife.

There's lots of fake skulls around at costume shops this time of the year, also at drug stores or anywhere they are selling halloween costumes. I like some of the other "relics" suggested. They'd be easier to come up with. How about some water from the Jordan River?

How's the costume coming along, Jan?

I'm kinda green because this sounds much more fun than halloween. Reformed churches rock!

How about Burger King crowns? They look kind of like pope/bishop hats. . .Some white sheets with slashed holes for the head and arms would look just like their robes. . .then you could bring whatever relics you wanted! A fingernail, you know, from Jesus, or a splinter of wood, from the Cross, of course, or a jar with some milk, from the Virgin's breast, undoubtedly (sorry, but true). They aren't Halloween costumes, but they'd sure scare any respectable Protestant!

Sorry, but I get creepy vibes from the new line of BK commercials.

Catholics used to be quite fond of something from day 8. I think it was even rumored to be a wedding ring once. And, if I remember the legend, it was suppose to expand in the presence of a virgin.
