Hello,

I had few queries regarding Christianity and the culture. I want to ask if Arranged Marriage is practiced there esp in the US and Europe?
I am not talking about the traditional kind. There are many kinds of Arranged Marriage too. ->

I don't understand romantic love, I'm not a romantic, but marriage just seems like a sex permit. You can do pretty much everything outside of sex/physical intimacy without being married. I guess my views of love coincide with scripture. (Love is kind, love does not envy.. etc) Arranged marriage, I don't know, being born and raised in a land like America, I can't help but think bad of it. We should be able to choose who we marry. Given the reasons for such marriages anyway. But it's sort of sad that arranged ones last longer then our free choice marriages today.

My immidiate reaction to arranged marriage is ICK! But I suppose that there are reasons for it and that it works for some people. I guess if that's what your family does and the prospective wife is ok with it then that's better than her being forced; as long as her wishes are considered.

I've never heard of an arranged marriage here in the US. I don't know if there are any.

Arranged marriages are not practiced much by westerners. (A few do though). Biblically they are condoned on multiple levels.

Arranged marriages are often healthier for the collective but less enjoyable for the individual. If I felt that it was my role to be married to a wife through some type of arranged marriage. . . I would accept that role.

I think its fine as long as everyone is in agreement. If not then it becomes a forced marriage.

I have similar beliefs. I don't see any problem with arranged marriages (hard to be against them when they are used so often in the Bible) but forced marriages are another matter.

Exactly. A lot of ppl think that all arranged marriages are forced, but they are not. My bf is East Indian and his sister just got married. It was arranged. The guy was someone she know of and he was suggested by both parents, of course. They got to know each other over the internet, sicne he is still in Sri Lanka. She like him enough to agree to meet him, and once she did she agreed to marry him. They seem very happy.

My parents had an arranged marriage. It's not as common to get arranged marriages in the USA, but it does happen and it depends on the culture. I know people who have done so or plan to, but it's traditional or modern arranged marriages and not forced at all. Once it's not forced then I don't see a problem, but personally I would never have an arranged marriage.

nope :) arrenged marreges aren't practiced the US. though because the way we veiw marrege, [which is mostly based on fantasy] arrenged marreges aren't such a bad idea.

I think it serves a purpose of it's own and it's not a completely bad philophy. it certainly makes sure no one is neglected and everyone has someone to be with [which i wouldn't mind, being that I get lonely at times]. I'm very grey in this area because it has pros and cons. Though almost everything has pros and cons.

The end result is what ultimately matters. This has to do with many unique dynamics. Including cultural normes and practises.

Happiness is the goal that should be striven for. Regardless of the cultural practises in vogue.

Mail order brides.

Well I wasn't totally serious but I would want her to gain more from it then just a ticket out of Eastern Europe.

Besides I'd prefer an english speaking bride.

I should start up a website for marriages of convience. (I term it as that because arranged usually means someone else arranged it. A marriage of convience means you married because it worked out well for the both of you for other things then love)

You could run searchs of what each person is seeking out of the marriage. Political gain, companionship, children, and even a combined income. And then they both sit down and create a written agreement on every aspect of the marriage as to what each partner will do so each person can acheive what they desire out of the marriage.

The main reason I don't is because this would only encourage adultry and divorce because westerners already don't know the meaning of a committment.

Not to mention this would also cause glorified prostitution where a woman marries a man with a lot of money and he provides her a generious salary for sleeping with him.

You may have something there, though I don't know if people will willingly be as objective as you. People like the mystery of romance, and the idea of finding that "perfect person".

Well I would like to find someone I love but at this point I am starting to feel like I'd be better off with someone that works out well for me.

I mean there have to be plenty of Lutheran women out there that are between 21 and 27 (Not my dating range but my *perfect* range), attractive, that want a lot of kids and just desire to have a semi-middle class home, raise a lot of kids in the Lord's word and serve God to the best of our ability that are trustworthy, nuturing, intelligent, and fun to be around. (You know the kind that wear stuff like this.)http://http://www.oldlutheran.com/M...ore_Code=OL&Product_Code=475&Category_Code=LC

Oh wait I'd probably fall in love with that woman. . .
