No, I don't. I should also state that I am in the same Presbytery as these folks, but I can't say that they know me or visa versa. I have met some of them, but meeting and knowing are different. I don't want to mislead anyone.

No Problem. I was just curious if there was a friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend thing going on.

(If you ever meet Larry tell him you're associated with one of the guys who helped put a roof on his mom's house. :))

Regarding the ESV Reformation Study Bible.....

Would someone let me know if there is any significant difference between that and the NIV Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible. (Apart from the translation that is...) I looked through the ESV RSB and I did not see anything that really jumped out at me that set this one apart. In fact, the SOTR looked to be superior in terms of general study helps.

I'll let you know once I have a basis of comparison.

I do not have either Bible right now, I am waiting for my Reformation Study bible to arrive. I have been using the ESV for my reading and study for about a month now. I first started using it on E-Sword and liked it so much that I bought one. At this stage of my faith journey my preference is for a word for word translation and I must say that I find the ESV superior to the NASB and far superior to thought for thought translations such as the NIV, which served me well for many years.

I have a great deal of trust in R.C. Sproul and Keith Mathison. I am sure that their notes are theologically correct.

If someone wants to donate a Spirit of the Reformation NIV I will gladly make a detailed comparison.

Just my 2 cents worth. :)

I have the digital version of the NGSB for Libronix. It has all of the study notes in digital form, which makes them really easy to search and reference. The notes are great!

considering my church uses the NIV, maybe i should get the Spirit of the Reformation Bible...but I keep hearing that the ESV is such a better translation, and I really like the word for word translation. I have an NASB and I love how it reads...

Wish I could get both.....argghhh

decisions, decisions.....

I guess i should be happy it's down to 2. SOTR in NIV or Reformation Study Bible in ESV. Hmmm. maybe I should "eeenie, meenie, miney, moe...." ? LOL

If you have an NIV to take to church, I'd get the ESV. I have the NIV and really do like it, but prefer the translation of the ESV. I'd get that one for personal study and use the NIV that I assume you have for church. That's what I've started to do and it has worked well for me.

I know what you mean....

Maybe this should not be that important. I would like to have on translation to read and study from but there is no one that I'm completely happy with. The ESV is very good but there are places where the NASB is better. The NASB is also good but there are some readings that don't read well and others that I just don't like.

Makes me wish I could assemble a translation by taking all the good readings from various translations.

I received my RSB leather bound the other day. I like it for the most part. The double-column layout is nice and the text is larger that I expected. There are a couple of things I don't like. First, there are no color (or B&W for that matter,) maps in the back. I don't know if they were trying to save money or what, but I think it's quite poor not to include maps in a "study bible." Also, I would have liked to see the catechisms and confessions that the SoTRSB includes. Overall, it's a good bible but I think aside from the translation, the SoTRSb is better.

I haven't seen any Reformed Study bibles in Australia though i wish there were some, any yeah i think a Reformed NKJV, or NSBA. would be great as i don't like useing the parphase bibles such as NIV and ESV.

I would hardly describe the ESV as a 'paraphrase."

Or the NIV for that matter......

OK well i take back the ESV but not the NIV i still think its more Paraphrase, Bible because it Translates thought-thought.

Not completely.

In fact, I think you'd be amazed in the similarities between the ESV and the NIV.

A true paraphrase would be more like The Living Bible or The Message.
