I find it difficult to compare my Spirit of the Reformation Bible to another, because I really don't have anything comparable to it. I do own another NIV study bible, but the notes are slanted toward doctrines contrary to the reformed faith.

That's really all that a study Bible is, a Bible with notes and other documents that support the doctrines of those who compile it. The notes included with this Bible are first rate, and well worth the cost of the Bible.

I do agree that it could be improved by using a different translation, so am happy to see the ESV version come out. But I am not in a rush to purchase it. I have a copy of an ESV Bible currently, and I have most of the notes I would expect in the newer version.

One note about the NIV SotR, it is single columned. I don't know if that is a proper term, but there is one column of text to a page. That is a welcome change from the norm for me. This format is easy on the eyes and makes for more comfortable reading. If you have a need to read NIV, or if your pastor preaches from it, I'd pick it up!

That actually may be a good idea, since my pastor does teach out of the NIV--I think only because it's the most popular version out there right now. It is easy to read, but I think it's kind of "stale" and there are too many "little" ommissions in it for my comfort. Tim does quote other versions when he finds a verse better translated than the NIV though.

I got a NKJV Nelson Study Bible when I went and bought my first bible(all the other bibles I had gotten as a gift-one KJV and one NIV). I quickly found out that Nelson and I don't see eye to eye, although to it's credit it does TRY to be unbiased, at least showing some of the different views....

So I went and bought a NASB, no study notes, and I really like how it reads. It just seems to flow better, IMO, then either of the other two. I had heard that it was one of the most literal translations out there, which is why I bought it.

I heard the ESV is similar?

I got to thinking about your request and was wondering if you had taken a look at the Matthew Henry Study Bible which is KJV?

Never heard of it, do you has a ISBN?

Is the Reformed Study Bible the same thing as the NGSB except that it's in a different translation (ESV)? Is there an ESV version of the NGSB?
From the link in the OP, it's saying that the New Geneva Study Bible was renamed the Reformed Study bible, and it's in ESV version.

There are many similarities. The ESV reads a bit easier for me, though. http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/preface/ You can see what it is all about, the translation philosophy, etc at this link. Also, you can look up any passage you like on the site, and at the bottom there is a link that will take you to a side by side of that passage and the translation of your preference via BibleGateway.

The versions available to compare or contrast include NIV, NASB, NLT, KJV, and NKJV.

Two ISBN's on mine MH10 0-529-10253-6, and MH10-1 0-529-10296-X

Amazon has them and possibly Overstock.

The notes, as the title suggests are Matthew Henry in KJV translation.

Good Luck

My wife got me the NIV Spirit of the Reformation Bible for Christmas - and I absolutely love it! Someone mentioned that it was very easy on the eyes (with the single column of text) - and that is so true! Very few Bibles are laid out this way it seems - so I would recommend it for that reason alone!

The notes and articles included with the Bible are indeed awesome. Also, for the first time I have been able to read the old testament with keen interest - and that is in part due largely to the notes of clarification and historical significance that this Bible includes. The people who put the study notes together really did their homework and put the time in to make this Bible an invaluable tool for personal study and edification.

I don't know about the ESV Reformation study Bible that just came out - but this one does include all of the confessions of faith particular to Reformed churches at the end. These include the WCoF, WSC, WLC, HC, and the BC. It was for this reason to begin with that I really wanted this particular version of the Bible.

I know there is a lot of hype about the new ESV RSB that just came out - but don't rule the NIV SRSB out because of that - it is very good. Take a look at both before deciding.

BTW - my church uses the ESV - and to be honest I find very little difference in the text between the two versions.

The NIV is the 'official" version in my church ( pew bibles.) To be honest I hate the nIV, I think it compromises on some texts and has an Armenian slant in places.

I attended a short Seminary class last year and they are all using the NEB

I am a KJV person, I can live with the NKJ or the NAS but my preference is definitely NKJ

I can't argue with you on that... The NIV SoRSB does point those areas out - but you are right - without something like that to point it out it could be confusing. I noticed a lot of that in Romans....

I have spent more time reading the KJV so am comfortable with it. For a good article on the NIV, which I don't care for, by a very good minister whom I know personally, go to the following:

The article is NIV: Simply a bad translation
