I have not engaged Pinkguard's teacher in debate... yet. But Pinkguard has asked us both a question for which she has received two different answers.

So as not to bias the results of the poll, I won't say who said what. Because I know you would all side with me anyway. :amen:

Anyway, here's the situation.

There's snow outside. Lots of snow.

Pinkguard asks, "Does this mean that it's winter now?"

Answer #1: Yes, it's winter. Given all of the snow and the frigid wintery temperatures, one can safely say that winter has arrived.

Answer #2: No, it's not winter yet. The official first day of winter is December 21st. It's still autumn, and snow can practically fall whenever it wants to in Canada.

Which answer would you give? One was given by me, and the other was given by Pinkguard's teacher.

I went with # 2. This is pretty much exactly what I told my daughter except substitute Alaska for Canada. My daughter is 7. We got our first snow on Sept 27th; six days into Autumn. Now she asks me all the time, "Is it Winter yet?"

Hmm, well, according to my mom, she remembers when it snowed in June, the same year they got married which was about 35 years ago. Not alot of snow, but snow nonetheless!

So although technically it isn't winter yet...not until the 21st, I'd just go ahead and say it is winter snow. Close enough! :p

I've often wondered what it'd be like to have snow in 30+C weather.

I voted for #1, even though it is not completely accurate. In actuality, I'd give a combination of both answers.

But to me, after the leaves are done changing and falling off the trees, the weather turns frigid and snow starts to fall, it is winter - regardless of what the calendar says.

This!!!

If snow determined it being winter or not, my town hasn't had winter in 2 years :)
We usually say it "feels" like winter.
LOL, my country would rarely get winter if it depended on snow. If we do get winter, it's only for a day.

Given the scenery in your avatar, I was assuming that it was winter all year round in the Netherlands. :)

You're lucky you can see my character. I can't. :sigh:

LOL, it's winter in my heart. ;)

(well, it used to be - and now I just leave it like this because it's season-appropriate.)

I'm such a stickler for complete accuracy and I like "rules" so I'd definitely say that it wasn't technically winter yet, but add, like many others, that it sure felt like winter. Then I'd probably wonder aloud why we hold winter to a date on the calendar rather than the feeling in the air.
