Redemption
Col 1:12-13 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet (able, qualified us) to be partakers (have a share) of the inheritance of the saints in light. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.
We have been not only delivered from something but delivered into something, I thank God that he hasnt just delivered us out of something and left us to struggle until Jesus comes back, but we have been delivered into something, right here, right now, delivered into the kingdom of his own dear son.
There are two kingdoms contrasted here, I want just to have a look at them and see what belonged to us in the old kingdom and what belongs to us now in the kingdom of his son.
Lets go back to the beginning. Gen. 1 We see God in the beginning, creating a whole new world, a magnificent creation, blue skies, green grass, majestic mountains, all the wonderful different kinds of animals running around, fish of all kinds great and small swimming around in the great crashing oceans and all for what? On the last day of creation God unveils his master creation, made in his own image and likeness, with the same ability to think and speak like God does, with the same spirit of God on the inside of him. God told him to go and subdue the earth and have dominion over it and to reproduce after his own kind.
Gen 1:26&27 why was Adam created on the last day? God made sure that all his needs were provided. Man had no lack, it was the will of God that man shouldnt lack anything that is why God created him on the last day.
Man was created to be a three part being, he is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body.
1Thes 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Heb 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
In the garden Adam had everything he needed, he had fellowship with the father, he had peace of mind, peace with God, he had all his needs met, he enjoyed perfect health, perfect provision, perfect protection, in fact everything was perfect and he had no needs of any description, no lack of any description, no fear of any description, everything was perfect.
God placed in Adam everything he wanted in mankind, Adam was the master copy of a whole new race, he was told to reproduce after his own kind. In other words everything that was in Adam would be in his offspring; everything that was given to Adam was given to his offspring.
God intended for Adam and Eve to populate the earth with a race of people just like themselves, with all the benefits that they enjoyed.
All they needed to do was obey one simple rule, dont eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Gen 2:15-17 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the Garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
One day the serpent came. He had only one thing in mind to destroy Gods creation. He came to Eve (and Adam was with her) to tempt her to cause her to sin against God. They were the seed for all mankind if he could corrupt the seed then all mankind would be corrupted.
Gen 3:1 and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
What did he say to her?
Did God say that you couldnt eat from any of the trees in the garden?
No?
Well what did God say? He was trying to trap her. He wanted to see if she knew what God had said and she wasnt too sure. (Gen 2:17 God had told Adam and it was his job to tell Eve)Then he knew that he could trap her. She added to what God said, she said v3 or shall you touch it, God didnt say that. She said lest you die, God said you will surely die. The problem with that was Adam knew what God had said and he didnt stop what was going on, he was the one with the authority.
Now comes the lie, you will not surely die...she didnt challenge him, Adam didnt challenge him.
Where did they fail? They failed because they got off the word of God; they needed to stick with the word. If the devil can get you off the word he will defeat you every time. She would have been better to say nothing.
The consequences of sin: Sin has consequences. What did God say? In the day that you eat of the tree you will surely die. Did they die? Yes they did. Most people think because they didnt drop dead there and then that they didnt die, but they did die, right then they died.
Rom 5:12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.
Where did death come from? It came by sin, death is not an end in itself it is a by product of sin. Sin is the root, death is the fruit.
So what does it mean to die? A lot of people think and some cults teach that to die means to cease to exist, but death never means to cease to exist. Death means to separate, right there and then there was a death or separation between God and man, we call this spiritual death. There are three deaths a man must undergo:
1. Spiritual death, which happened that day and means that our spirit is separated from God, or no longer in fellowship with God. Notice he didnt cease to exist. (see Isa 59v2)
2. Physical death, which is when our spirit is separated from our body, or there is no longer communication between our spirit and our body. Our body goes in the ground but the real us, our spirit goes somewhere, and it doesnt cease to exist.
3. Eternal death, which follows immediately after physical death and means that our spirit is separated from God for all eternity. We still dont cease to exist but will spend all eternity separated from God in eternal punishment. 2 Th. 1:9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.
But not only are there three deaths a man must undergo but man died in three arenas spirit soul and body.
1. Man died in his spirit and no longer has the life of God in his spirit, he no longer has access to God or fellowship with God, man can no longer be in the presence of God without coming into judgement or condemnation.
2. Man died in his soul in that he no longer has the life of God in his soul and is separated from the peace of God, he cannot do righteous acts any more but is now become a slave to sin.
3. Man died in his body in that he longer has the life of God flowing through his body and is subject to sickness and disease and the lusts of the flesh etc.
Sin has consequences, everything that brought sickness, sorrow, poverty, fear and separation is a consequence of sin.
1. Sin is the absence of righteousness or right standing with God.
2. Sickness is the absence of health.
3. Poverty is the absence of abundance.
4. Death is the absence of life.
Life gives to you, sin is a taker and it takes from you and it steals from you.
Gen 3:22-24 man is now an outlaw and an outcast from the presence of God with no legal ground to approach God.
God sent Jesus into the world to be the saviour of mankind; Jesus came to deliver us from this kingdom into the kingdom of God.
I Jn 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power (authority or right) to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.
Through Jesus man again has the right to become the sons of God, through Jesus man again has access to the father and is in right standing with God.
Jesus died to redeem us from the three deaths we must undergo.
Spiritual death: separation from God: - 2 Cor 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ.
Physical death: separation from the body:- Rom 8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (see also 1 Cor 15:42ff)
Eternal death: separation from God forever: - 1Thes 4:17 then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
What about the punishment for sin?
The wages for sin is death. Rom6v23
What were the consequences of sin in the garden?
The fruit of sin is death, but death has many by products also, sickness, lack, poverty, fear, loneliness and eventually actual death and so on.
1 Cor 15:21-22 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.
2 Cor 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.
This verse needs to be clarified, we quote it so fast sometimes that we miss the meaning
If any man be in Christ he is a new creature or a new creation A creations requires a creator, there must be a creator and there must be a creative act to have a new creation
We have not been fixed up we have been recreated, our born again spirit has been recreated in righteousness and true holiness according to Eph 4
How many things are become new?
Not just one thing, not just some things, not just a few things but all things. Some people believe that our sin was just taken away, but thats just one thing, he tells us here that all things are become new.
Jesus death was one of substitution, Isa: 53:5 Jesus died to redeem us in three arenas spirit, soul and body.
He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities, these are spiritual, transgressions are deliberate acts of breaking the law of God. Iniquities are character traits or inherited weaknesses in a persons nature for a particular sin. Things like temper, (hes just like his father, quick tempered) children who grow up in abusive homes often times end up abusive themselves etc.
The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, peace has to do with the soul, peace of mind and peace of heart.
With His stripes we are healed, healing has to do with the body.
We see that Christ has redeemed us spirit, soul and body or redemption for the whole man
2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Sin is the object of judgement.
1. If sin is taken away so also is judgement.
2. If sin is taken away and the judgement is taken away then so are consequences (punishment).
These were the consequences in the garden
The fruit of sin is death, but death has many by products also, sickness, lack, poverty, fear, loneliness and eventually actual death and so on.
But now in Christ, the sin has been dealt with, the punishment has been laid on Him and the consequences do not belong to us any more Glory to God
I have become justified or made right with God.
Rom 3:24-25 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.
The first Adam made a mess out of things, so God made a whole new Adam, and his name is Jesus, the last Adam. Jesus took on the condition of the first Adam. He took that into Himself, died with it, and made it so that the moment you receive Jesus Christ by faith, His death becomes your death. His burial becomes your burial. His resurrection becomes your resurrection. His righteousness is your righteousness. His ascension is your ascension. His victory is your victory. His seating is your seating. His life is your life. His blessing is your blessing. Everything that God put in Him now comes into you.
Everything that God wanted to put in me he already put it in Jesus he is the master copy of a whole new race.
If you want to change what is on the copy, you need to make a new master. The new master erases all that was on the old copy and remakes the new tape, without fault.
He became our substitute, if you could imagine a list of who it is we are: sinners, unrighteous, sick, poor, defeated and with a death sentence hanging over our heads and then a list of who it is he is: righteous, healthy, blessed with all spiritual blessings and with life abundant and eternal and then swap them over, what I had he got and what he had I got this is the reason Jesus died.
Jesus did not commit a sin to become sin. No, it was put upon Him by God the Father and Jesus received in himself all the sin and consequences of fallen man. I do not have to commit a righteous act to become righteous; I openly accept the righteousness of Jesus; it is a free gift. The work of the cross is the divine exchange.
He exchanged my sin for His righteousness. I have become the righteousness of God!
All the things that were in me because of sin have been transferred to him and all the things that were his because of his obedience to the father have been transferred to me.
So where do we go from here? We have been declared righteous, our sin has been dealt with and all its consequences. We no longer need to walk as citizens of that kingdom, with all its benefits, we have become citizens of a new kingdom, we have a new Adam his name is Jesus.
Now the devil is unhappy, his work is undone, he knows that he is defeated but he hasnt given up and so he again comes like a serpent to trick us, just like he did with Eve.
He asks the question did God really say ? What will you answer?
If he asks
Are you really saved ? What will you answer?
If he asks
Are you really healed ? What will you answer?
Matt 4v3 it is written. Anything Jesus said would have been enough but you cannot improve on the word.
The word is your identity in Christ.
It details what has been done in Christ. It shows us who we are in Christ. But we need to identify with it. John 3:16 God so loved that he gave that whosoever believes in him
Substitution alone cannot save you or the whole world would be saved
What would you do in a foreign country if someone asks for your identification?
What would you do if they began to argue with you and say ? No! Thats not you.
Would you agree and say ok then it isnt me I must have made a mistake, I always thought that it was me but obviously it isnt.
No! You would fight through every court in the land to prove that it is your identity, but when it comes to the enemy we give in, we say Oh! I must have made a mistake and he tricks us all over again, stealing from us or making us sick.
We have been made the righteousness of almighty God in Christ Jesus, sin has been put away with all its consequences, and the devil no longer has any right to put anything on us only what we allow him.
Lets begin to make a stand, lets begin to enforce the laws of this new kingdom, where the devil has no place.
Col 1:12-13 Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet (able, qualified us) to be partakers (have a share) of the inheritance of the saints in light. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.
