Has anybody ever heard of Christian Reconstructionism? They're a group of mostly Reformed Christians who want to make America into a theocracy; they also want to implement the Old Testament laws. These people are for the stoning of homosexuals, women who have abortions, and children who disobey their parents.

If these wackos have their way, there will probably be nobody left in America! Just wanted to see if anybody had heard of this group.

But presumably want to ignore Jesus's commentary on who should start the throwing.

of course we've heard of them, they've always been around. they're called scribes and pharisees and lawyers, also known as a brood of vipers. For Christ has said "Judge not, and you shall not be judged". they apparently think they can pass muster on the great and terrible day of the Lord. and they, of course, will be wrong. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.

The government under which Jesus lived was corrupt and oppressive; on every hand were crying abuses,--extortion, intolerance, and grinding cruelty. Yet the Saviour attempted no civil reforms. He attacked no national abuses, nor condemned the national enemies. He did not interfere with the authority or administration of those in power. He who was our example kept aloof from earthly governments. Not because He was indifferent to the woes of men, but because the remedy did not lie in merely human and external measures. To be efficient, the cure must reach men individually, and must regenerate the heart.

Not by the decisions of courts or councils or legislative assemblies, not by the patronage of worldly great men, is the kingdom of Christ established, but by the implanting of Christ's nature in humanity through the work of the Holy Spirit. "As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name: which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." John 1:12, 13. Here is the only power that can work the uplifting of mankind. And the human agency for the accomplishment of this work is the teaching and practicing of the word of God.

When the apostle Paul began his ministry in Corinth, that populous, wealthy, and wicked city, polluted by the nameless vices of heathenism, he said, "I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." 1 Cor. 2:2. Writing afterward to some of those who had been corrupted by the foulest sins, he could say, "But ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God." "I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ." 1 Cor. 6:11; 1:4. Now, as in Christ's day, the work of God's kingdom lies not with those who are clamoring for recognition and support by earthly rulers and human laws, but with those who are declaring to the people in His name those spiritual truths that will work in the receivers the experience of Paul: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me." Gal. 2:20. Then they will labor as did Paul for the benefit of men. He said, "Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God." 2 Cor. 5:20.

There are different branches in the Reconstructionist tree. They all come off as wacked out but some far more so than others. The group mentioned in the OP is one of them, but on the other end of the spectrum is a group that is basiclly post millienal in their beliefs. They believe that the World will be conquored by the Gospel Of Jesus and then He will come back. They rely on the passage that says His enemies will be made His footstool for this belief. Another view in this camp is that there will be a great war the world against the Christians and by winning this war the way will be paved for Jesus to come back.So basically what i am tring to as say this label is all over the board but guess what it is gaining popularity. Manyof the ideas encompassed in this view were the mainstream before WW1 but after that it's popularity wanned.

This idea actually goes back to Calvin and his time in Geneva, where he did set up a theocracy.

Most reconstructionists are little more than fascists hiding behind a religious veneer. They take too much pride in being "seperated" and "holy" and will only witness their own fall, unfortunately.

Heard the claim that the majority of the preachers in the Bible Belt would like to see the Ten Commandmants enacted as civil law. This is the first step in the Reconstructionist program.

Down he-uh in the land of Dixie, we'd just appreciate being able to place them where we want.

What is GWB? went to the link and they sound like they think they can set up the Lord's perfect Kingdom here on earth! This is not going to happen until Jesus returns and HE sets it up.

I've never heard that term before but I know at least one group of people with those beliefs.

Woah!
I live in the Bible belt and I'm fairly well plugged into what's happening in the culture. I have never heard any reconstructionist agenda here. I think it would be antithetical to southern culture. We're independent and want less government intervention in our lives not more.

When Jesus came the first time he challenged those who thought politics and law were the means to change people. The Pharisees were the ones he singled out for the greatest condemnation because of their legalism and focus on the external rather than internal implications of Gods demands upon the faithfuls lives. It remains the case that law can only go so far in effecting the righteousness of a community.

When Jesus comes back it will be to a situation dominated by the man of lawlessness. Those who lack a heartfelt commitment to a gracious and merciful Gods justice, righteousness etc will spend eternity in hell.

So it does not seem ludicrous to me that Christians might be looking to preserve some sense of Gods justice in the laws of nations. When this is finally stripped away a global state will become the greatest persecutor of Christians in the churches history.

Ultimately only Jesus will bring the whole globe into Gods perfect Kingdom but does that mean that Christians cannot achieve islands of righteousness in the short term. In the end all Christians are theocrats by definition because they place Gods kingdom higher than the kingdom of this world.
