  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

[I hope I am posting this in the correct section....it may need to be moved to General Theology?]

Which Bible commentaries do you use?

Can you recommend a good Bible commentary? (Preferably a one-volume Bible commentary).

If you prefer, you can also recommend a good study Bible

Theologically, I am from a Reformed and/or conservative Presbyterian theological background

I have a NIV Zondervan study Bible that I got in 2008. It has Jesus' words highlighted in red.

Thank you. Poppyseed78, what do you like most about the NIV Zondervan Study Bible?

I like that it explains each passage, including historical context for a better understanding. This makes it easier to imagine the setting while reading and provides some topics for discussion. I strongly recommend a Bible that highlights Jesus' words to make looking up important verses easier.

Thank you for the excellent Study Bible recommendation

I use a Hebrew-Greek keynote ESV study bible. It has Hebrew and Greek lexicons in the back, and keys in some passages that explain them. It also is red letter (on Jesus's words) and has cross references but I'm not too good with those.

What is the name of the Hebrew-Greek keynote ESV study Bible that you use? Or who is the publisher?

Thank you very much!!

You're welcome! I got mine at a Lifeway ($80) I think if you have one nearby. I will say it's huge though. I don't like carrying it on my laptop because my laptop is thin and it is fairly heavy.

I think I can buy an older edition of the same Study Bible for $30 from Amazon

the commentaries I use are

NT Wright's For Everyone Study Series - John: N.T. Wright for Everyone Bible Study Guides

The Pillar New Testament Commentaries - The Gospel According to John: Pillar New Testament Commentary [PNTC]

Warren Wiersbe's Be Series - Be Alive (John 1-12), Repackaged

For a study Bible, after going through many, I really like the Fire Bible Global Study Edition -
NIV Fire Bible Global Study Ed, soft leather-look, Black (NIV 1984)

Thank you so much for the detailed list. I will definitely have a look-see at the NIV Fire Bible Global Study Edition
