Hail, Holy Queen
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy!
Our life, our sweetness, and our hope!
To thee do we cry, poor banished
children of Eve, to thee do we send
up our sighs, mourning and weeping
in this valley, of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us; and
after this our exile show unto us the
blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus;
O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God
That we may be made worthy of the
promises of Christ.

Amen

Let us pray. O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for use the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Rowan, even though EOs don't use the Marian rosary, unless your church forbids it, you are more than welcome to join the rest of us next time.

Or perhaps, if there is an EO Marian tradition that could be said cooperatively like we did with the Marian rosary, I think I speak for all of us that I'd love to learn it and recite it along with all the EOs.

Like I said from the beginning: there have been too many negative threads assalting Apostolic Christians or our Mother. I think a rosary or another Marian traditional devotion once in a while will cheer and lighten hearts and redirect us and remind us that, wherever St. Mary is, there is Jesus, to Whom she always jestures to. :)

It's far from being forbidden :)

Some info that explains it a lot better than I can:

http://www.unicorne.org/Orthodoxy/hiver2004/prayer.htm

http://www.westernorthodox.com/rosary

http://www.spokaneorthodox.com/rosary.htm

And even a letter from an Orthodox spiritual father recommending the prayer rule "Mother of God and Virgin Theotokos rejoice said 150 times":

http://www.orthodoxengland.org.uk/esabbas.htm

..which is:

Rejoice, O Virgin Theotokos! [Mary,] full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, [Jesus,] for you hath borne the salvation of our souls!

The [] is for the slight variation that I've seen. I've seen the prayer without names being used more often, though.

I believe there is a precedent for specific prayers of the Orthodox Tradition said before the rosary in preparation instead of those used by Catholics (such as the "O Heavenly King"), but don't quote me on that; I can only confirm that I've read about this practice in Eastern Catholicism. And as far as I can tell, there is a difference in the decades prayed by the Eastern and Western Orthodox.

And of course, as a catechumen, I stand to be corrected about any of this :)

I agree :)

This has to be the most beautiful thread I have read in a long time. Thank you, everyone.

Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with you.
Blessed are you among women, and Blessed is the Fruit of your womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.:crossrc:

Hey Catherineanne! Join us next time!

I think Rowan should lead us next time in an Eastern Marian devotion; whad'da think, Rowan? Willing to teach us Westerners something new? :)

I most certainly will. I am almost ashamed to say that since the Mariology section was established I have not ventured here, because I suspected it would be a magnet for vitriolic comments about Our Lady. She does not need me to defend her, and I most certainly do not need to read comments to her disrespect, and so I have stayed away. However, it was lovely to find the rosary thread.

I know what you mean about Mariology. Yes, unfortunately very often it's a target for anti-catholic people to come and attack. I have stopped reading a lot of the debates. It grieves my spirit.

I am glad you are here, CatherineAnne! And Rowan! Beautiful names, by the way!

It's better that another Easterner choose to do that (I'm just learning myself, ya know), but I can share one of our prayers/hymns:

It is truly meet and right to bless thee
O Theotoks who art ever blessed
and all-blameless Mother of our God
More honorable than the cherubim
and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim
thou who without stain barest God the Word
and art truely Theotokos,
we magnify thee!
