  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's hard to imagine that these things actually happened. There really was a man (Jesus) who walked into the temple and threw a table belonging to people selling things in the temple. There really was a man that fell asleep in a boat only to wake up and rebuke the winds and waves into being calm. And his torture was real. I think it would be a healthy practice for every christian to endure being whipped twice. Once to know the pain and the second time to see if it hurt as much as the first. He really said that with pray-er(er, typo), fasting, and faith it is possible to cause a mountain to be thrown into the sea. These people had real lives. The pharasees had their jobs attacked. This was their livelyhood and this hairy scrawny little trouble maker wasn't paying them any respect. He openly to their faces said they were wrong with all they were doing.

Again, its hard to imagine that what we are reading are real accounts.

There is a story I've heard and it could be untrue but I see no motive. There were missionairies that spread the word of Jesus to a shaman and the shaman pointed at a bird that was flying and told it to die and it did. The missionary was dared to show what his/her God could accomplish. The story goes that the missionary was just frightened, didn't do anything, and I believe ran.

Do you believe or are you someone who enjoys a good story and feels comforted by it? Well, being both sounds good too ^_^

*cringe*

I think that the quoted portion might be considered extremist by conventional standards, but to adress the substance; IMO whether some details are interpreted as allegory or as literal history is largely irrelevant. Much of what is relevant in faith is the degree to which practical scriptural teachings are applied to one's daily life and the degree to which Christ is emulated. People who get hung up on whether or not one believes literally that Christ destroyed fig tree by cursing it are missing the point, IMHO.
