  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have always heard that you are supposed to have three months on income put up for emergencys. If you get sick, lose your job, what ever.

I don't have a savings. I have never been good at saving and I really have a hard time saying no to Taylor when she ask for something.

I was hurt at work on Feb 8th. I really thought I had all my bases covered because I have a long and short term disability policy for any illness or injury that I would need to take off work for any extended period of time. I also have good health insurance.

Well, workers comp which should be paying won't pay because they are claiming that the problems I have are preexisting. They are, they have just gotten worse since the fall. I have lived in pain with my neck and back for years. It isn't anything new.

Disability won't pay because workers comp should be paying. So basically I am screwed there. My health insurance will be ending on the last day of the month because I can't afford the cobra payments.

I have also learned that had I been in a car accident or basically any other accident where anyone else could be at fault they still would not pay.

I am still in a lot of pain and I don't know that I can sit in a desk all day every day. I don't see where I have a choice but to go back to work, pain or no pain.

I won't get to have the neck surgery that I need because I am losing feeling from the 3 hernaiated disc in my neck.

So, I am now praying that God will heal me.

I do have a job lined up. It pays a couple dollars an hour less than I made before but it is more than enough to cover our bills. I was just hoping to get to have the surgery before going back to work.

My reason for this long post, is basically to warn everything to read the policiys that you have when you think you are protected in every way it isn't always the case. They have so many little clauses in them, often they really can give you a false sense of security.

I know a lot of people here live on one income. Just thinking how important it is to save money.

I agree, having a certain amount of money in liquid form (that is easily accessible as cash) is very important. Living paycheck to paycheck is one check away from homeless and that is very alarming.

Maybe this would be a good time to teach Taylor about sacrificing and self-discipline when it comes to physical things. A little delaying of gratification only helped people become more appreciative when they were finally able to get the object of their desire.

We have 3 months worth of expenses in savings. It was really hard to have to say no to thing I really wanted and we could have bought so many fun things and gone on some great trips. But no, my husband insisted we place any extra money in the bank. And now I'm so so glad it's there.

I'm sorry for how things are going for you....

We have one month's expenses in an emergency savings fund. We can't afford more yet.

Same here.
We had more until DH was laid off a few years ago - 2X and haven't caught up with the savings :)
I agree with Previous Posters - good time for a lesson. My kiddo's know not to ask for certain things already (ages 3 & 5) and they understand sacrificing already :)

That is awesome that you are able to do that.

It is almost like you can't afford to be sick.

There is also supplemental insurance. Usually it is offered through payroll deduction, but you can purchase it alone. Policies like Accident Indemnity or Cancer or Hospital Protection.

I'm biased - I work for a company that involves a duck... but there more and more companies that offer such products every year.

I have seen many families get cash when they need it most.

Well, the CF clock looks like it lost time again so I don't know where in the list this will show up at...

I am not a lawyer, so naturally this is not "real" legal advice. However I have a smidge of experience with this issue. Basically, the worker's comp place is going to claim anything they can to keep from paying. They are a business and it is their job to protect their money from frivolous claims.

However, regardless of what disability you had before the accident, the fact remains that due to an injury at work you are no longer able to work in the capacity you once were. They need to cover the difference. However they won't, without a fight. This means a lawyer, and those guys cost money. Sometimes for a small fee you can talk to one. Sometimes even the small fee is more than you can afford.

Not sure that is reassuring to you, but it sounds to me like you played by the rules and are therefore entitled to some benefits due to an on the job injury.

I always thought workers comp lawyers only get paid once you receive your payments? At least that has been my experience in the past.
I have retained an attorney and she doesn't get paid unless I get paid.

I haven't been greatly impressed with her though. I just have to trust that God is in control and it all is going to work out.

I purchased the supplemental insurance. That is what won't pay because I was hurt at work.

Can you tell me what I need to do?

It depends upon what kind of policy it is and what the exact details of the policy are and what company you bought the policy from.

If it was a Disability policy, they almost always do not cover on-the-job injuries because workman's comp covers while you are at work.

If it was an Accident policy, it should pay, unless it was a policy that specifically excludes on-the-job injuries.

Feel free to PM me with more information...
