Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has experience in using VPNs? What was your experience like? What program do you use? I use ProtonVPN via means of TunnelBack. It works perfect on my macOS and its free. Just curious.

Yes, Virtual Private Network, as I understand it, makes your web presence undetectable without losing connectivity by assigning your actual location another bogus location on the other side of the country for instance. The only nuance is having to temporality disable it for some of your security measures to run properly, or some critical task such as financial and sundry websites requiring a more visible idea for their cookies to work on you. Those are some of the downsides. But in day-to-day activity, in my estimation are a plus to any antivirus, nefarious web bad-guy efforts.

Duck duck go as a browser and search engine. I've used several over the years PIA, tunnelbear...
Use a vpn service that does not keep records so they cannot be compelled to surrender information they don't possess. There are pros and cons.

Tor browser is a open source vpn that relays and encrypts your traffic 3 different times.

Vpns can slow you down. They can cause some sites not to work.
Tor, if you wish for some reason to retain anonymity.
I simply detest the grubby corporate fingers constant prying.

I use a lot of VPNs. There is one for work, and one I setup using Headscale and Wireguard so that I can access my home network and stream media like I am at home. I setup the external exit nodes using digital ocean mostly because I did not want to send over my browsing data to some private company and my use case was 1. to ensure encrypted connections when I am at a coffee shop or other public wifi. 2. To access my local network at home and 3. To stream my personal media collection (from movies that I bought and digitized into a local media server.

I haven't used any commercial VPNs but I believe some of them use the same software (Wireguard and similar to Headscale to determine exit nodes).

Have you ever used ProtonVPN?

No. I set up my own VPN servers since my use case is for encrypted channels on public networks or to access my server resources.

I like ProtonMail though. They have a good privacy policy and are hosted in a privacy respecting country.

Having said that I would take all claims by all providers with a grain of salt.

At work we have a tech who has taught me a bit about Headscale, I'm working on setting him up some resources to make it happen, for business-case observation and testing. All of our VPN usage right now is either router-to-router or SSL VPN, I'm hoping eventually to give us more flexibility using Headscale.

Right now, email seems to me to be mostly stuck. Software IMAP clients don't do MFA (with just three exceptions to just one provider, to my knowledge; anyone have more?), and without MFA, there is danger for many, I have the tech hours to prove it. I have a lot of hope for the new JMAP protocol, but it's clearly a ways away.

I've only used Mullvad and Bitdefender.

I'm very happy with Mullvad. I only used Bitdefender a little bit; it had come with my anti-virus subscription and only covered 200 mb/day.

In my opinion, Mullvad has better security. Maybe a couple of years ago, they had conducted an audit on Google Androids and had found that there was a security flaw. Google's response - it's not a bug it's a feature.

I use Norton's VPN. Comes with my Norton 360 subscription. I like it a lot.
