  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I really like it when anime (or any video/dvd) indicates the reasons for the rating somewhere in the small print on the back. Stuff like "Violence, adult language, sexual situations".

I agree with this. It should state why specifically caution may be needed. There are many anime that I have seen that actually does this. Too bad they all don’t. People unfamiliar with anime may not know what they are getting into. In Japan, it is an adult and child audience. I think some people have a hard time understanding that adults can watch “Cartoons”. Every time I hear “Cartoons” I flinch and have to tell them, not Cartoons, it’s “Anime”! :help:

There's something called the summary on the back cover, and there's something called anime review sites.

And you know, if it says 18 on the cover, I think your parents *should* be asking questions if you're thinking about watching it. It's called good parenting.

I think the Japanese rating system is different from ours and if they modified the ratings you can bet that the cost would be passed down to us the consumers... I really thing anime is expensive enough as it is thanks :)
That already happens in Britain, and has the added effect of causing both a publication timelag as well as causing many not to be released at all, due to the added expense of going through the British BBFC testing system.

A few British age ratings:Akira 15, Blood: the last Vampire 15, Evangelion Parental Guidance.

As to whether there should be age restrictions, I'm of the opinion that anime should be treated as any other form of visual media, and should be given appropriate age limitations. I believe this to be especially appropriate as there is a danger of parents who automatically associate any form of cartoon with children's entertainment buying anime which contains material inappropriate for their child's age due to ignorance.

Erm, first off, no, anime is NOT the Japanese word for cartoon. I'm pretty sure, that for a while, anime was not even a real word. In any language, though it was mainly derived from French.

Second of all, anime already has ratings. At least most of it does. The majority of the big companies, like ADVFilms, Geneon (Pioneer), Bandai, etc. They all put ratings on the anime they release.

I personally don't have a problem with violence, fanservice (fanservice usually isn't nudity, folks!), or occasional (but not graphic!) nudity, as long as it has a story to keep me interested. But, a show full of NOTHING but violence, fanservice, or nudity? Count me out.
