  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Rating on anime?

Does anyone think that they should put ratings on every anime that is released in the U.S. Someone at my school got one from Best Buy and when she put it in, with her parents watching, it started off with complete nudity. Most animes don't have any ratings on them, like Samurai X, filled with blood, although it is very good. I believe that animes should have ratings on them so you don't buy a really bad one on accident.

I personally don't think animes should have ratings on them because anime's with more adult ratings would probably not be carried by many chain stores. And that would leave out several of my favorite animes.

But then again, you should at least know about what you are buying when you buy, so I try to look up any anime before I watch it. Here's a few of the websites I go to for anime reviews...

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php

Has every anime ever made. Unfortunately it also misses on a lot of the obscure anime, as far as details go.

http://www.point-blank.cc/

Has reviews of a lot of the newer animes that are being released.

http://www.anipike.com/

Last resort because the websites listed on this one are usually geocities, or the like, and are of course down.

http://www.google.com/

Type the name of the anime you want to buy in, and read from a few of the websites that pop up. Simple enough, no?

Most anime do have ratings on it, though not the MPAA ratings. Look at the back or front and you will see ratings like 13 up, 17+, etc. The rating for Samurai X (aka Rurouni Kenshin) Trust & Betrayal and Reflections OVA series is 17+, which is a good rating IMO.

I never find ratings a good rule to go after anime for. Some series that I have encountered over the years had a lower age recomendation on them but got into things that I just didn't want to see. I find it's better for us, the viewers, to do a bit of research about the series that we are about to watch and decide on that.
That being said, I think that the current ratings need to jump out at your better. I used to work in a video store that had a small selection of anime but they kept it in the kid sections (and it was anime that had a 17+ rating). There are still too many parents in North America who think "oh its just a cartoon, lets get it for the kids". On one occasion I had a huge fight with a parent because they refused to believe me when I told them that what they were wanting to rent was not for children (it wasn't till I went and grabbed Heavy Metal and asked if she wanted to add that one for the "kiddies" that she realized that just because it's drawn does not mean its for kids).

Do you remember the name of the anime?

I agree with everyone who said their should be ratings. Only because you don't want to end up with something completly nasty or obsene.

Most animes are edited when they are brought to North Amercia (my gosh even Sailor Moon was edited).
It isn't as much as more lenient there but that a lot of animes that are viewed as "for kids" here aren't aimed at that age group over there. Or at least the animes that I have any interest in watching.
