Rastafarianism: A new religious movement centered among persons of African origin in Jamaica and the U.S. They revere the late Emperor Selassie of Ethiopia (1892-1975), as the Elect of God and savior of the black race. They regard black people to be the reincarnation of Israel in the Bible.

its founder was 'His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia..' c. 1880-1933?

Some books of the Bible are held sacred, but their is a prevalent belief that 'Babylon' changed other books..Bible is Holy Piby (..i think..)

major influence of the philosophy was Garvey

largely lower class, politically passive (for the most part) until 1970's

Ganja smoking is not recreational..taken very seriously as a Religious sacrament
"... thou shalt eat the herb of the field." (Genesis 3:18)
"... eat every herb of the land." (Exodus 10:12)
"Better is a dinner of herb where love is, than a stalled ox and hatred there with." (Proverbs 15:17)
"He causeth the grass for the cattle, and herb for the service of man." (Psalms 104:14)

...are cited for 'proof'

Rastafarians are Judeo-Christians.
They recognise the validity of all faiths.
Many are vegetarian some are vegan some eat fish.
They say each person must work out the correct way for themselves.
His Imperial Majesty Emporer Haile Sailasie (named Ras Tafari before his coronation as Emperor of Ethiopia) is believed by some to be a reincarnation of Jesus and by others to be a reincarnation of King David, Haile Sailassie himself denied these claims. Marcus Garvey is believed to be the reincarnation of John the Baptist, although Garvey did not agree with the Rastafarians as regards to their assertions about Haile Sailassie.
Jah a shortening of Jehovah is their name of God.
Many Rastas do not smoke Ganja.
The most widely known exponent of Rastafarian philosophy was Bob Marley. He descibed his religion as the natural way.
"Open your eyes and look within are you satisfied with the life your livin',
We know where we're going we know where we're from,
We're living in Babylon we're going to our Fathers land
Exodus movement of Jah people....."

Don;t Rastafarians believe marijiuana is a holy sacrament?
They use it as an aid to meditation. This practice is traced to the British mass movement of India to the West Indies (when they controlled most of both). The Indians were used as "indentured laborers" after slavery was officially abolished. These Indians brought marijuana with them, and they used it for the same purpose. You can still see sadhus using it in India today. The word Ganja itself is Indian. Its usage in Rastafarianism is very serious, although not all of them use it.
