  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So I like all kinds of music. But I require variety. I like a little Regina Spektor and a little Rammstein and a little Fly leaf and a little System of a Down and a little classical instrumental celtic/taiko/any kind of music.

It's not that I don't like the sound of rap... it's just... not the most... original.

And my new room mate's not a problem, but his friends come over a lot... and they immediately swipe the computer and start listening to music... which I don't mind... but it's 100% stereotypical rap. ... "Look at me dance, I'm really cool! I like pot and looking at girls."

And you know none of "those" types are making music for the art or to express themselves... they know people will pay them to perpetuate a stereotype, and luckily, they have no dignity.

... But, I know that's not all rappers. Can someone give me a list of some more decent rappers out there? I listen to Slipknot, so it doesn't have to be church acceptable... but I want to at least get these guys a step in the right direction by encouraging them to listen to music that takes more time to write than the song is long.

D12 and eminem, for example. A lot of it isn't exactly "Positive" ... but listening to the lyrics doesn't always make you dumber.... And linkin park isn't just rap, but it might be an acceptable transfer into the realm of other music too.

... So, who can suggest some rap or semi-rap artists that have songs about anything other than "chronic," "dropping it," "wad'ing me crank dat supaman," and how "she like my duggits" .... .... PREFERABLY someone that doesn't intentionally mispronounce the word "air" as either "uur" or "aYer."

... i.e. NOT this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DsyZdeFjug

... with such memorable lyrics as "ya'll don't understand. I'ma make you understand." ... yea.

k, thanks for all of the suggestions. Keep 'em coming, certainly.

I'll look into all of those. I've never liked the stuff 2Pac did... A lot of the ones I've heard from him is just about how "thug" he is. It's just an "I like myself, I'm super cool" song... Sort of comes off arrogant.

Whereas Eminem actually... you know... sometimes raps about things other than himself and how cool he is and things he likes.... ala "my favorite things" from the sound of music... 'cept with more butts.

lol good luck with that, most people that are ONLY into that type of stuff only will like the pop or mainstream type of music.... music that plays on MTV and whatnot. but Busdriver is pretty cool, kind of hip-hopish but he still raps.

by the way i knew a couple ppl like that and try and do the same thing.... didnt care for it too much, "too different" in their words, meaning they don't like things that are not popular by the media... sellouts xD

It's pure shame (albeit an understandable one) that you can't post links until you reach 50+ posts. I had a good list of soul food lined up for you all.

If you're still interested, in youtube search:

johnson and johnson hidden track (the realest & [for me] most played song in 08)

blu in remembrance of me (Blu again, this time from his classic 07 album with Exile called Below The Heavens -- if you haven't heard it, get it!)

goodie mob soul food (classic.... you can't go wrong with Goodie Mob)

goodie mob blood

I struggled with rap music myself at the start. What I did was start with the supposed "classics" and worked my way down. I didn't love everything I heard, but I did pick up a lot of stuff I loved. Just as a starting point, here's what I recommend:

Nas - Illmatic
The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready To Die
Outkast - Aquemini (a top 50 album for me, any genre)
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
De La Soul - 3 Feet High And Rising (proof that sampling is an art unto itself)
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique (same as above)
Kanye West - Late Registration
Common - Be
Lupe Fiasco - The Cool

If you don't like anything from the above albums, rap just isn't for you.

Anyone got some favorite verses?

"[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] used to wear rags on they hair when it was fried up
That's when we were lied to, buyin hair products
Back before my generation, when our blackness started disintegratin
'til awareness started penetratin
The styles come from prison, they used potatoes makin liquor
just to prove we some creative [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]
Turnin nothin into somethin, is God work
And you get nothin without struggle and hard work
War is necessary to my [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] in chains
From Greene to Sing-Sing, I'm wantin y'all to know one thing
The hardest thing is to forgive, but God does
Even if you murdered or robbed, yeah it's wrong, but God loves
Take one step toward him, he takes two toward you
Even when all else fail, God support you
I done it, got Gods son on my stomach
My heart and my lungs was affected from Henny's and gettin blunted
Do your body right and it loves you back
You only get one life, and yo because of that
I'm still blazin, goin out for the cause
Still rockin stockin caps, not for the waves, obeyin no laws
And it's like that"

Styles P - My Brother

"
Life is a circle of pain
The darkest clouds, end up like the purplest rain
They say patience is a virtue in the game
F--- it, I guess I died when my brother died
Cause to tell you the truth, I feel like I'm the curse in the game
My vision is blurred, dreams is shattered, my heart is broke
Pain so deep I find it hard to cope
Missin your smile and missing your style
I figured I'm the next one dead so we could kick it a while
Cause your name lives on, the sun still shine
Every time your baby mom life up your child
I guess I gotta switch my angle now
Take a positive look, hit a blunt my little brothers with the angels now
Some of us fall and some of us fly
But at the end of the book baby all of us die
Word, my [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]

[Chorus]
There's my brother
I could smile, cause I know he right next to Allah
Right next to the prophets and the soldiers that died
And all the angels in the heaven that be holdin the sky

There's my brother
I could cry, for the fact I can't hug him no more
But my tears go to heaven and I know the [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] feel me
And the good thing is he aint got to worry no more

I said there's my brother, wit Allah
Best place he could be"

dude, the happy sunshine friendship team that moderates here is very strict. maybe you should edit.

Anyone got some favorite verses?
yes! lots of them.

the one i'm listening to now. "super lyrical" by big pun w/ black thought:

"My murderous rap verbal attack is actual fact
Tactical tracks match perfectly with graphical stats
Half a you lack the magical dap of tragical rap
That tackles you back and shackles and laughs at you
That's the mathematical madness I'm on, the savage, the strong
The marriage, a bond of havoc and song
This massacre's on as if Picasso laced you
There's lotsa hateful skeletons locked in the closet of my castle of Grayskull..."
