This is just a post to talk about all of your random musings, on religion, philosophy, politics, whatever you feel like, to talk about them and stuff. I'm not sure of a good place for the thread, if so mods please move it to a more appropriate thread :)

I often find myself wondering, how did things come to be as they were today? When did living with nature, as just another animal become not enough for us? Why would we want to trade in such a life for this life we have today? Where we once walked with nature, now we have barren strips of concrete laid down to get us from place to place faster. Where we once slept under the stars, or perhaps in a hut or cave of some kind, now we live in little air conditioned boxes, closing ourself off from the world, as if our private life is somehow embarrasing to us.

More than that it amazes me how little regard we have for life of our own. We used to hunt or grow only what we needed for our survival. We respected, even revered nature. Today it seems that nature is just in our way. Cows are only meant to provide our meat, trees, flowers and bushes are only meant for ornamental purposes. Animals live in small cages, only to be used fo our amusement, which can never really be held too long by anything. Dogs and cats have become strange, apathetic, witless creatures, far from what they used to be. Even more domesticated is ourselves. We live, cut off from the world, in our little air conditioned kennels, leashed to this place by our 9 to 5 job, only being let to roam free 2 weeks a year as our masters see fit. Welcome to new earth.

But if you look closely, you can still see traces of old earth. The sun still rises and sets in the morning and night, painting the sky a brilliant orange, red and purple. Birds perch on the telephone wires; they don't seem to mind.

And I ask you, how absurd is this life we now have? Why have we forsaken this beautiful life we once had, only to replace it with barren concrete wastelands and processed foods? Can we really be happy in this life? Perhaps, for it is the only life we have ever really known, it would be what makes us happy. But is there any people here who are also thoroughly annoyed (for a lack of being able to use a more appropriate word) at this shadow life has become?

I am not suggesting to go back to our primitive ways, forgetting the miracles of science and technology. I propose a world where everyone, every living thing for that matter, is equal. Plants grow freely, animals roam freely, not one above the other. Do we need these roads and cars to carry us quickly from one place to another? Of course not. Get off your lazy duff and ride a bike. Or even better, just walk there. A few hours walk among nature will not kill you. As they always say: It is not the destination, it is the journey. Do we need these processed foods to be delivered to us from the slaughterhouse? Of course not. Hunt, farm, but most importantly never forget to be thankful for the food you get.

If music is so important to us, how come there are so few musicians and so many transistor radios? If art, or theater is so wonderful, why are there so few artists and so many television sets? If something excites you, why not do it for yourself, instead of watching people do it instead? Wouldn't that be a much more meaningful existence?

I guess it really was very random musings. :)

Wow. Some very cynical things there. But then again, not. lol. I often have had similar thoughts and discussions with the wife. Though we live nestled in the country hills, we have to abide this modern life. While we yearn for progress, we ache for what we have lost. Yet, I still think it possible to live the truly simple life, which has nothing to do with whether you utilize technology or not.

I live in the semi outback of country Australia and walk with nature daily. But, there is no escape from progress as we switch on a computer and learn. Pick up a mobile telephone and speak.
Going back to how it used to be would be nice. But then again, I remember when there were no electric blankets, and no proper refridgeration, no air conditioning and the cars were hot in summer and cold in winter. Nope - wherever we are, we should blossom where we are planted and be grateful for that which we do have.
I wouldn't like to have to see the men steering ploughs behind the draught horses.
