Demon's Souls has to have the bleakest video game world I've ever experienced. There really is almost no hope to be found in that world.

It seems to be common with horror these days, whether games or movies, to be extremely bleak. Even RE7 feels pretty bleak at times compared to past entries but it has some humor at least.

I've found that some horror media have at least a hopeful, if not cathartic ending despite their bleakness.
