Surprised there's not already a thread on this, but influential Christian writer Rachel Held Evans died suddenly last week from flu complications. She was only 37, and leaves behind two young children. She was a powerhouse writer who ruffled a lot of feathers but also brought a lot of people who had felt rejected and abused back into Christianity. She will be deeply missed.

So I hear, it is always the ones on the outside of the norm that God seems to use. Take Jesus for example. Although I have not read anything from her I would like to some day. I think I remember seeing her on Patheos.

I have not heard of this woman until the news of her death. From what I have been reading about her, she seemed like a controversial original thinker, and that is something I personally appreciate in a person (even if we do not see eye to eye..). Sad to see a soul like that pass away so soon.

Thanks for the thread. I too was surprised there wasn't one, but didn't feel it my place to start one. I read her book Evolving in Monkey Town (based, I believe, on her blog of the same name), which was later (and more accurately) retitled as Faith Unraveled: How a Girl Who Knew All the Answers Learned to Ask Questions.

Growing up in Dayton, home of the Scopes trial, she bumped into questions, and she had an admirable curious streak that drove her to look into them for herself.

She didn't easily fit into stereotype categories -- certainly not mine, and probably not yours -- but I think she was motivated by an honest curiosity much like the one epitomized in my .sig.
