  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

BBC News - Eric Garner death: Fresh protests across US cities

With the unrest across the US my first reaction was one of "I'm glad it's not like that here".

But then, do we as Brits have cause to believe relations between ethnic groups in our own country are much better? Sure there's not the same gun violence but is there any less animosity?

Well, the Garner case reminds me somewhat of the Mubenga case here:

Jimmy Mubenga 'suffocated to death after G4S guards pinned him down' | Daily Mail Online

I don't think it's that much of an improvement that it was G4S who was responsible rather than one of our police forces.

Then again, I don't buy the racism angle quite so much on these individual cases. You cannot really extrapolate and conclude systemic abuse and discrimination from these single cases, and very often the racial difference results in greater coverage by default.

There's a rather good series on a blog by writer Will Shetterly called "Excluded by Intersectionality" that shows how very often similar acts of police brutality/overzealousness do affect white people as well, but they rarely get as much coverage.

Social Justice Warriors: Do Not Engage: excluded by intersectionality

This one I found particularly notable.

http://sjwar.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/excluded-by-intersectionality-two-white.html

I haven't seen "Christopher Roupe" or "Nick King" become rallying calls, unlike "Tamir Rice". Then again, maybe the cops involved did get hauled over the coals for their mistakes in those cases, rather than being let off by grand juries or whatever.

I think there is a lot of simmering racism underneath the surface, not just in the shires but even in the supposedly multicultural towns and cities.

The Rosy "Political" Multiculturalism foisted by the media is a comfortable middle class invention, largely carried by those who don't have a clue, their "multiculturalism" being the Uni's of the land, where there are many different people, but most being tunnel-vision'd alike.

In theory I'm quite for multiculturalism and the mixing of cultures - I'm one of those idealistic types - but on a realistic level I understand why there is so much concern about immigration, as it is perceived to be too big in volume and too fast in speed. It is unfortunate that people seem to be unable to untangle the topic of immigration from the topic of racism.

I think most people here would perhaps agree with me. But I think that a person who showed animosity towards another person, a stranger or acquaintance, solely or mainly on the basis of their skin colour or ethnicity, the person showing the animosity is completely unhinged.

God Bless:)

Whilst that is something we would all agree with consciously (hopefully), subconsciously we all make subtle pre-judgements based on appearance, including skin colour or ethnicity, I think it's unavoidable.
