  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

i'm looking for a few good books on the topic of racism and presbyterianism. i found:
Black and Presbyterian: The Heritage and the Hope
by Gayraud S. Wilmore

On Being Black and Reformed: A New Perspective on the African-American Christian Experience
by Anthony J. Carter

i'm particularly interested in anything that spans the Civil War.
they are for my sunday school class on the ministries of mercy, plus a rewrite on my history of american presbyterianism class.
thanks

Let me suggest researching Oberlin College. It was founded by Presbyterian ministers and had an abolitionist statement in its charter (as did the community of Oberlin - I've heard it referred to as the town that started the civil war). The college/community was a regular stop on the underground railroad.

(OK - so Finney was one of their early presidents and he wasn't exactly Reformed but you can overlook that.)

Interesting that the thread title says "race" and presbyterians, but then it changed to "racism". So are you looking for stuff that deals with race-relations more generally, or something else? Either way, I doubt you'll find much in the way of a fair, balanced treatment of the subject if you rule out contemporary sources like Dabney and Thornwell. Very few (if any) present day Presby writers who address these issues can do much more than offer up a feminized wallow in self-loathing flagellation and denouncing our non-abolitionist ancestors (North and South) as ignorant bigots.

How embarrassing for them!

i've read a lot of Dabney, very little of Thornwell. at this point, on my reading list are:

Black Puritan, Black Republican : The Life and Thought of Lemuel Haynes, 1753...

Black and Presbyterian: The Heritage and the Hope by Wilmore, Gayraud S.

On Being Black and Reformed: A New Perspective on the African-American...

still looking...

I'm very interested in what you may find in the northern church at this time. I'm an old-school Presbyterian with less attraction to Thornwell than to Hodge.

I ran across this blurb: http://www.civilwarhome.com/abolitionreligion.htm

I've read little bits about slavery and the Presbyterian church in other books.

I don't think Presbyterian churches generally realized how blacks were ... well, "set up" by the Civil War, as W.E.B. duBois described. I found his description compelling as to what happened after this war. And while I think a number of people held no ill will toward blacks, the terrorism that resulted led many whites to pipe down at great injustices, for fear of reprisal.

That's not an excuse, either. Frankly whites could "pass" for bigots among bigots and get away unscathed; blacks couldn't.

I also realize I'm approaching heartfelt issues from a very intellectual direction. I'm sorry if this sounds unfeeling, for I don't experience what blacks underwent and undergo in this country.

You may want to get in touch with my brother-in-law Dr. Ron Rumburg. He is Chaplan in Chief of the Sons Of Confederate Veterans and a historian. His personal library on both religious and southern history is enormous. He is a Baptist but could probably give you some very good references on the subject. I don't necessarily agree with his stand on some racial issues but I believe you will find him very helpful. Let me know if you would like for me to put you in contact with him.
