Rabbits

Hello there!
I was curious as to who here has rabbits currently and who has had them in the past. My sister and I had two rabbits, but mine died in December. Yesterday, I got two more for free...they came with a cage and everything...which was a pretty good deal. Their names are Seamus and Skelly, and they are brothers, both about three or four months old.

In case you were wondering about the names (lol), Seamus is an Irish-Gaelic form of James, and Skelly is also Irish-Gaelic, meaning "storyteller". Those names just jumped together as a pair, and although they were vying with the names Simon & Garfunkle, Laurel & Hardy, and Rowan & Alder, they got picked because they fit the rabbits.

I have a dwarf bunny. Cutest little thing ever. She will sit upright in the palm of my wifes hand and not move. Loves to be petted and to eat treats. She gets so excited every time we come into her room. If I remember, I'll attach a photo.

We used to have 2. A grey one, and a black and white one. They were just your average rabbits.

They escaped though and we never saw them again.

i used to have one when i was lil..

but i left him in his outside run-around gate all nite, when i woke up i found him shred to pieces..

either a dog, or a racoon, not sure..

but i felt so bad...
still do.

bunny's r cute tho. we used to put our bunny with our guinea pigs.. they get along great.

and love fresh fruits n veggies..and alfalfa.

ooh now i want a bunny. i'm a sucker for cuddly-cute animals..

In South Dakota my mom, sis, and I each had one in a "bunny condo" we helped my dad build. My sister and I shared the work of cage cleaning plus food/water.

Laura wanted a rabbit one day. So she and Mom were surfing the Net, looking at online photos, and deciding what kind of rabbit to buy. She decided on a lop-eared rabbit. Dad was on a business trip, so she asked him about it when he called home. He'd grown up raising rabbits, but he and his brother ended up with so many their dad (my grandpa) decided to make supper out of a few. So my dad gave Laura permission: "What, to eat? Sure!" Laura: "DAD!!" He laughed and said it was okay. After looking through classified ads, my sister called a family about 50-60 miles away; it turned out to be a family that raised rabbits for show and had a huge metal barn full of cages! They were moving, and their two kids could only keep one rabbit each. Laura chose a 1-yr-old lop-eared one that was white with brown patches. They had one small cage with tiny baby bunnies -- I could fit two in one hand! They were so sweet.

A month or so later, I had permission to get a rabbit. I invited my sister to go with me. I picked her up from school and we went to a farm/garden supply store that sold baby rabbits for local breeders. I settled on a small gentle gray bunny; the cashier told me it was a boy.

Another month or two went by, and my mom said she wanted a little black female lop-eared bunny. Laura and I went to the store where I'd bought mine and put in a request. We got a call 2-3 days later and went back to pick it up. Well, it was still a baby, but as it grew we noticed it wasn't lop-eared! Mom had fallen in love with her little bunny so quickly that she didn't mind.

We kept the bunny condo outside, by some trees near the house and garage on my parents' 4.5-acre lot; sometimes we'd put one of the bunnies in a wire cage and set the cage in a patch of grass or clover for them to nibble. They also liked wild daisies and dried pine needles. (We had to make sure and break the bit of tree sap off the needles first.)

One fun thing I loved doing was taking mine for "walks". We'd bought a chihuahua-sized dog harness for the rabbits. Putting on the harness was difficult, as they'd try and jump away. But once the harness and a light-weight leash was on, and our dog was safely onto the deck, we'd let them hop almost anywhere!

My dad was asked to work at the company office in Minnesota last year. Transporting the rabbits between MN and SD just for Christmas or other visits got to be quite a hassle...not to mention finding someone that would check water-bottles in the winter when she went with him on business trips! So my mom gave our rabbits to a nearby shelter that finds good homes for pets.

I taught my rabbit to use a litter box. He caught on very fast and never had any "accidents"....he did however like to chew on electrical cords. We let him roam free in the garage/laundry room, and he ate the cords off the washer, dryer, deep freezer, and iron. Somehow he never got electrocuted though!

I've had dwarf bunnies and mini lops. The dwarf was the crabbiest thing I'd ever seen, but the minies were incredibly sweet. I had a lil boy miny a while ago, but I had to get him fixed `cause he kept coming after my leg. Ew. lol. But then he tore out his stitches and I had to put one of those dog color type things on him when he was restiched. Then when I had gone through feeding him meds out of a dropper and yougert twice a day for a month, he finally got it off. Then he died. It was from stress. I was very upset for quite a while, and i'm still ticked at the first vet for doing a crappy job. Well, anyway, they are wonderful little pets.. just... try to get girl ones. The boys... can be troublesome.

I have rabbits. Plenty of rabbits. LOL. I'm a rabbit breeder and I raise 6 different breeds of rabbits. Netherland Dwarfs, Jersey Woolies, Dutch, Holland Lops, Lionheads, and Palominos. My bunny died this time last year. He was a great little guy.
My daughter and I didn't have the heart to bury him, so we cremated him and have his ashes on the fireplace mantle.

I love rabbits and would like a Dutch one, but my whippets are rabbits hunters. When we move in, the wild ones move out, too. I never see one unless I drive fairly far away.

I love bunnies. When I was little, I can still remember begging my parents for a rabbit, course they would always say no. Still wish I had one though.

Next month I'll have 4 new litters of babies. 2 litters of Netherland Dwarfs, 1 litter of Holland Lops, and 1 litter of Jersey Woolies (Which I'm hopeing will be Blue Eyed Whites since the doe is a BEW and the buck is a BEW Sport).

I got the picture from an article last year..but I can't remember where...I think the rabbit was from the UK.
