I don't know if there's been another on of these on the go, but thought we could have a thread where we can share some good Wesleyan quotes (not just from the Wesley family, but anyone associated with any form of Wesleyanism).

I'll start us off with the one from my signature,

"Neither the learned nor the unlearned are saved from the trouble of thinking. All are to think. This is the way to understand the things of God. Meditate day and night." John Wesley

You're requiring me to *think* Dave ;)

I wanted to quote from Relational Holiness by Thomas Oord, but that book is lost in my parents' house. So here's another choice -

"...it is not faith that satisfies the law, but it is love that is the fulfillment of the whole law." Mildred Bangs Wynkoop in Theology of Love p. 244

Sorry MM :sorry: Forgive me :D

Thanks for a brilliant quote
I've not come across either of those books, I'll have to get down the bookshop at some point. Hope you can find the Oord :)

"I observed, "Love is the fulfilling of the law, the end of the commandment." It is not only "the first and great" command, but all the commandments in one. "Whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, if there be any virtue, if there be any praise," they are all comprised in this one word, love." - John Wesley, 1733

They are both Nazarene Theologians, but of the Wesleyan variety [vs the American Holiness Movement variety]. Relational Holiness is cheaper and easier to understand.

"...only a pure heart can love properly. Love proceeds out of a pure heart. Love describes the character of a pure heart in contrast to an unclean heart." Mildred Bangs Wynkoop in Theology of Love p. 265

Theology of Love is a wonderful book. There was another book by Mrs. Wynkoop on Arminian Theology which was also very good.

Here is my Wesley quote:

"....let us confess we have never yet seen a Christian country upon earth."
John Wesley, Semon #4 "Scriptural Christianity"

"Churches who invite people to come to church grow, those who don't die."

Arthur John Gossip on infant baptism -

"Always, in every sacrament, God is the Central Figure, and it is what He does that is of supreme moment. So here, it is not the baby nor the parents upon whom we ought to keep our eyes, but upon the Lord God Himself, most surely in our midst - taking this little one into His arms, pledging Himself to stand - towards him - to every word of grace that He has ever spoken, erasing the general terms out of the promises, and writing in his very name instead, so that it runs, no longer, God so loved the world, but God so loved this little soul - that He gave His only begotten Son for very him, if he will have, and take, and use that wonderful gift. Meantime here is the personal pledge to very him, that God intends it, and has planned it all for him." from Experience Worketh Hope c. 1945 p 169.

Beware you are not a fiery, persecuting enthusiast. Do not imagine that God has called you (just contrary to the spirit of Him you style your Master) to destroy men’s lives, and not to save them. Never dream of forcing men into the ways of God. Think yourself, and let think. Use no constraint in matters of religion. Even those who are farthest out of the way never compel to come in by any other means than reason, truth, and love. - John Wesley

When I first read that 2.5 years ago, I didn't get the point at all. Was very confused as it sounded almost unchristian. But now after being healed of so much religious garbage, I say "AMEN"!
