Too many great quotes, he was truly my favorite hymn writer!

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds,
And drives away his fear.

It makes the wounded spirit whole,
And calms the troubled breast;
’Tis manna to the hungry soul,
And to the weary rest.

Dear name! the rock on which I build,
My shield and hiding place,
My never failing treasury filled
With boundless stores of grace!

By Thee my prayers acceptance gain,
Although with sin defiled;
Satan accuses me in vain,
And I am owned a child.

Jesus! my shepherd, husband, friend,
O prophet, priest and king,
My Lord, my life, my way, my end,
Accept the praise I bring.

Weak is the effort of my heart,
And cold my warmest thought;
But when I see Thee as Thou art,
I’ll praise Thee as I ought.

Till then I would Thy love proclaim
With every fleeting breath,
And may the music of Thy name
Refresh my soul in death!

People do their country more service by pleading for it in prayer—than by finding fault with things they have no power to alter!
True even in a "free" nation like the USA. We think we are free but allow politics to enslave us.

Beware of the world! It is thorny, deceitful and treacherous! Those who are very much engaged in it will find their troubles multiplied with every day.

There is only one political maxim which comforts me: "The Lord reigns!"

John Newton choice excerpts

I’m enjoying reading through this.
I'll never forget the first time we sang this one. It ministered very deeply to my soul at a time when I needed it most:

1 I asked the Lord that I might grow
in faith and love and ev'ry grace;
might more of his salvation know,
and seek more earnestly his face.

2 ’Twas he who taught me thus to pray,
and he, I trust, has answered pray'r,
but it has been in such a way
as almost drove me to despair.

3 I hoped that in some favored hour
at once he’d answer my request,
and by his love’s constraining pow’r
subdue my sins and give me rest.

4 Instead of this he made me feel
the hidden evils of my heart,
and let the angry pow’rs of hell
assault my soul in ev'ry part.

5 Yea more, with his own hand he seemed
intent to aggravate my woe,
crossed all the fair designs I schemed,
humbled my heart, and laid me low.

6 "Lord, why is this," I, trembling, cried;
"Wilt thou pursue thy worm to death?"
"Tis in this way," the Lord replied,
"I answer prayer for grace and faith.

7 "These inward trials I employ
from self and pride to set thee free,
and break thy schemes of earthly joy
that thou may’st find thy all in me."

This. I share the same experience, I remember when I first heard this when I went through a very dark period in my life.

I just noticed Hymnary.org has a change from the original in the 5th stanza. It says "humbled my heart", but the original says "blasted my gourds". Whomever changed it probably figured not many people would recognize the reference to Jonah.

Not even the exact equivalent of what Newton meant.
