• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Good luck!

I've quit for the second time about six weeks ago...based on my experience this and the next day (2nd and 3rd day) will be the hardest, then it gets easier.

Everyone has to find an own way to deal with it, but there is a general concept:
Smoking is a kind of ritual behaviour, as you've probably been told countless times now. It may help you to make up your own "replacement ritual" that takes a few seconds or even a minute or so that you can start immediately when you feel an urge to smoke...basically replace the smoking habit with a different habit.

Myself i personalize and antagonize the nicotine...i imagine that i could talk to it, and that the nicotine (a filthy blob of tar in my imagination) is trying to seduce me to smoke again. Then i proceed to smite it verbally:
"You nasty nicotine think you could make me smoke again? Think again! You lose, i win!"

Not exactly like that (i use some more expletives ;)), but you get the idea. It helps me a lot, because it's an appeal to my stubbornness - i don't just refrain from smoking because that's good for me, but also because that way i can make it rain on that nasty nicotine's parade.

Alternatively you could imagine the unsympathetic CEO of a tobacco company instead of a talking blob of tar ;)

Another thing that might help you is to drink lots of mint tea or anything else that contains menthol. Anything that helps you to breathe more easily than otherwise is welcome now. That way you feel an immediate benefit (even if it's just from the menthol) when you take a deep breath. It just feels great.

I hope it helps!

Hi, that is great you want to quit smoking. I will be praying for you both.

Here are some encouraging scripture verses on being free.

Freedom Scripture verses

Psalm 118 verse 5 “In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free.

This is a beautiful verse - when you need to, cry out
to God and He will answer and set you free.

Jeremiah 40 verse 4 “ But today I am freeing you from the chains on your wrists .

The chains of addiction to cigs. will be broken - Jesus will set you free.

Romans 6 verse 18 “ You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.”

Romans 8 verse 2 “Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.”

John 8 verse 36 “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Matthew 28 verse 18. “Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”

Jesus has the key to unlock your chains of addiction

Isaiah 19 verse 20 “When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors, he will send them a Savior and Defender, and He will rescue them.”

I hope you let the word build your faith to resist temptation, in Him you will be free.

Love and blessings
