I've done exactly one quilt in my life! It was in sewing class... BIG ole queen-sized beaut! Log cabin pattern, mostly blues and whites... has an interesting sort of Sistine Chapel-ish effect, kinda like looking at a multi-arched ceiling with paintings on it. I need to take a picture of it and post it. :D

I think an excellent way to start is to go to your local Borders or Barnes and Noble and look in the Hobbies section for a good book for beginners. Or look in the magazine section of any supermarket, there are tons of magazines about quilting. Most of them have instructions in the back for beginners. That's how I got started. Just remember, even if EVERY book you read tells you something must be done a certain way, but you'd prefer to do it another way, don't let that stop you. Do it your way. For example, I don't like to use a hoop or frame when I quilt. So I don't, and my quilts come out just fine.

If you don't want to spend too much money, most local libraries have a craft book section that usually has a good selection of quilting books.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

I began by going to a class which just showed how to do a small sample - probably the size of a cushion. This got me started as it wasnt too big to handle and I was finished it quite quickly - that gave me inspiration to try something bigger. I have only completed two bed sized quilts but have begun to collect fabrics for another. I am not a quick worker but it is quite therapeutic to pick it up and do a little bit every now and then. Joining a group is certainly incentive though to get going.
Blessings! :pink:

How exciting to see there are QUILTERS HERE. I love to quilt, I've been sewing for about41yrs. but quilting for about 17yrs. At the end of this month I"m going to a quilt retreat. It starts on Friday then goes to Sunday afternoon. I think this is my 6th.
Tomorrow AM I'm teaching a class on putting pictures into quilts. It is "sew" easy.
Sorry I'm running off at the keyboard.
Anyone want to start a project?

I want to start a "crayon quilt". My mom has been making these with her church ladies group. You take a 12 x 12 square of white muslin and draw on it with permanent fine-point Sharpie (you can trace pictures from coloring books or whatever you would like). then you color in the pictures with regular Crayola crayons. you then place your finished picture between 2 pieces of paper and iron to set the color. Then you can join the pictures together with other squares or strips of fabric. They look really fun!

I love to quilt! I first learned from a couple ladies in my church who taught a class for several weeks. They taught us the chain-stitching method, so I don't use any templates.
The first one I made was a log cabin, and it is what some would call "interesting". lol But I got better, and now I really enjoy it. With real little ones running around though I don't get much time. I have to just sit and watch others talk about it for now.

I do have this project in my head started for a "Trip Around the World" quilt that I'm really looking forward to starting.
