I've found that trying to study the word on the pc just puts me to sleep.

Same for anywhere else.I guess I just need to pray for God to make the Word come alive for me,huh?
I think I have finally been able to keep consistent in reading the bible but it took some experimentation. I think that every person has to find a way that works for them.
First of all, expect yourself to get bored/tired/lose concentration, etc. You simply will not want to read the bible sometimes. But you know that you get blessed when you do read the bible, even when you started reading when you didn't want to do it at all. So the way I solved this is by just forcing myself to read. I would leave bibles in areas that I knew I would be. (I always seem to end up with multiple bibles! They are pretty cheap, so I recommend buying a couple extra for this).
To get my concentration going when my mind drifts, I simply read out loud until I get in to it, then I go in to silent reading.
I try to make sure that I find a comfortable chair and turn on enough light so my eyes don't get tired. It also helped to use bibles that have print that I can see easily.
Drink coffee if that helps too. I don't listen to music because it distracts me. Something instrumental would probably be ok but that might lead to sleepiness if it's soft classical music.
I never jump around in the bible because it tends to defeat my drive to read through. I used to use reading plans. Yearly reading plans might actually work for you. You have to try them to see. They are useful because you can print out a list of your daily readings and then you always know where you are in the bible. You just check off the readings as you finish them. Your bible probably has a bible reading planner in the front or back, or you can find one on the many web sites out there such as this one (

I don't use yearly reading plans because i found that I wasn't getting enough momentum going, and it was too slow for me. I thought that maybe it would actually work for me to start with genesis and just plow through at my own pace (a fast pace) so that I would get more of a sense for the whole story of the bible. I also read some New Testement as the Spirit moves me since I read the sayings of Jesus (I like the bibles where his words are in red print), and also the epistles which many of them can be read in a sitting. Most people recommend the yearly reading plans because they have you read both the old testement and the new testement in equal portions daily. There are also topical reading plans. Or NT only reading plans. SKy's the limit really.
Prayer is a big part of my reading. I try to start in prayer, asking God to help me read, to understand, to retain, etc. I also have had to repent at times of pride in my studies. I sometimes stop and pray for situations and people as I am reading, because my studies will remind me of things that need prayer. I see my reading times as meditation and prayer and fellowship with God. Sometimes it's more "deep" than other times.
You might also find inspiration from getting involved in a bible study with some other folks at church, perhaps a men's group. Because although the study with them will be different than your private readings, it will get you excited about the word, hopefully. My inspiration came from participating in a "Bible reading club" one year at my church.
