  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I will be having my first comfession soon and I am definitely going to write some things down and then burn it afterwards because I will be confessing almost 9 years of sin (I was baptized when I was 7). I see no problem with it as long as it does not take the meaning and sincerity out of your confession, which I am sure that it won't.

For my first confession upon returning to the Church I did this. 8 pages front and back.

I've done it once or twice since when I go a long time between confessions. I try to go frequently enough that it isn't necessary. There certainly is nothing wrong with doing it and it will help you feel that you've fully confessed.

Not at all, it is more that in previous confessions sometimes I forget something I wish to confess and then afterward it leaves you with a nagging feeling. I would like to spare myself that and make sure I walk out of the sacrament pure in spirit and with a clear conscience.

I have done that, I go almost every 2-3 days now, so my sins a pretty fresh in my mind..

I think it is a great practice, and lends itself to making a complete examination of conscience! Just remember to rip up your list and toss it away after Confession!!

Great practice Shannon.

I understand what you are saying but don't let it bother you too bad because as long as you don't intentionally leave it out you are forgiven. But I admire your love for God that you don't want to leave out anything, even if it is an accident.

Frustrating experience today... the bulletin of my new Church says Saturday Confession 3:00-4:00 pm. I took the bus downtown and when I got to the Church it was locked. I stayed until 3:30 and it was still locked.

Maybe they set their clocks back yesterday by accident

I try and go to confession each week and I kneel and go through an "examination of conscience" beforehand. Honestly, if I've commited a mortal sin, it's not something I'm going to forget and I'm likely to hit the confessional the very next day if I commit one. So, if I forget a venial sin, no big deal. That's what the catch-all "for these and all the sins of my life" is for :)

I dont want to start a denominational thing, Jesus died to pay the price of my/your/our sin, unless my Bible is wrong.

My thought is spend the time and effort you give to writing a list of "sins" into praising him for the fact that your sins are forgiven, by his grace.

I believe I could spend all my life reflecting on the things I have done, still do, and will do that fall short of the glory of God, thank God I can just xome back to him to know the slate is, and always will be clean.

Be blessed in his love

He died so that sins may be forgiven, not that everone's sins past, present, and future will be forgiven. If this were the case, there would be automatic universal salvation.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.

How can we confess our sins if we don't know what they are

Um....not only do I write my confession down but I write my grocery list, my list of things to do, my thoughts on a particular project at work, things that I need as I go along my day, etc. down too.

Once I hit 39 my memory totally started to go.

Hm. Well, just try not to get in too much of a hurry at any point and accidentally hand your "grocery list" off to family or friends, asking them to take care of it because you don't have the time, eh?

That could get messy.

"Wait a minute... ....My grocery list is right here. What did I give Susie...???"

Jesus did die to pay the price for our sins, this is true, but He also expressed His desire that we go to confession. I'm sure you'll agree that picking and choosing which of Jesus' words we follow is a bad idea as our Lord wasted no words (John 20:23).

Really, we should try and do both. Like Quanta said, we're not following Scripture if we don't confess our sins as God has commanded, but you're right, Tiny. We should also take the time after that confession to praise God for his mercy et al., rather than get bogged down in a "woe is me" spirit. "Your sins are forigven you. Go in peace," the priest tells us at the end of confession. Sometimes we forget that and "wallow" rather than praise. Thanks for the reminder!
