• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You might add Cavell to the list, though he doesn't participate in much of the rest of the WP, he does make a semi-regular devotional post that I at least, and maybe others, have come to rather look forward to.

MoeSyzslak and sinner/SAVED are two others who I see active in various threads in the WP.

I don't get it. What's this for? And how was it determined who is and isn't a "member" of WP?
It's just to give us a quick way to send a pm or post in the guestbook for those who are fairly active in WP.

Thank you for doing this Kristen. It really is a great way to try to contact our WP friends who seem to have gone missing.

There are some names I think should be added such as Kryzoz, Morgaine1205, TPony and another or two that's on the tip of my tongue. Who will do updates? And can we make this a sticky?

Interesting, because it looks very much like a vehicle to indicate exclusion of those who are not the "right kind" of Wesleyans.

That is not at all how it is meant to be, nor should it be interpreted that way.

Frequently members participating in this forum will be gone for a while and then it requires hunting for a thread to find them or hunting through the membership list to drop them a note.

This list does not require a statement of membership to WP - it's just a list of CF members who participate fairly regularly here.

:(

I'm confused and a little upset by this. I don't mean to be confrontational, but what are you basing this on? We don't exactly have a history of being exclusionary. What is the "right kind" of Wesleyan anyway? I think of this forum as place where everyone is welcome, and to me this thread is a way of continuing the sense of community that I think we enjoy here for anyone who wants to participate. Why assume ulterior motives?

Sorry, I allowed some of the emotions I expressed in my thread about the purpose of this forum to bleed over here. I shouldn't have done that and I ask your forgiveness.

When I first saw the list, I saw that many of the names on it were not active posters at CF, much less active posters at WP. As a fairly active poster in WP, I could only guess that the reason I had been excluded was because I was not a conservative evangelical like others on the list. I noticed other posters in WP of a more liberal bent were similarly not included.

Finally, I didn't understand (and still don't) the purpose of the list. I highly doubt that WP mods are going to contact me if I don't post here for awhile, and if it's just friends contacting friends, it seems to me just as easy to add them to your buddy list, or enter their sname in the Members search box than as would be to find a sticky in Wesley's Parish.

I'm sorry. Thanks for all the hard work you guys are putting into this, I guess I just assumed ulterior motives because I didn't understand the whole concept.

I knew I spelled ulterior wrong. That's what I get for posting sleepy.

Thank you for explaining. I must have seen the list after you did, because I recognized everyone on it as someone who posts here. I think when putting together something like this people do get left off...just because it's hard to remember everyone.

I am still a little confused about how you got that some of us are conservative evangicals. I really don't see myself that way, and personally I have no idea where anyone else stands. I figure that's one of those things that people have to work out for themselves - and if someone else's outlook doesn't match mine that's ok. Everyone has a different path.

Would you like me to contact you when you don't post?:) I can do that!^_^

I did too. I was just surprised to be left off. When someone with a health bar of 17%, and others with one less than 100% are included and I'm left out, I find it hard to believe I was innocently overlooked.

I am still a little confused about how you got that some of us are conservative evangicals. I really don't see myself that way, and personally I have no idea where anyone else stands.
I got it from reading posts here that support the conservative evangelical viewpoint. Some examples:

-one poster was upset that a Baptist on the radio criticized Methodists. I don't know which Baptist it was, but I've never heard a Baptist on the radio who WASN'T a conservative evangelical. Furthermore, any criticism that would be levied against Methodists by a conservative evangelical would be readily acknowledged and welcome by any Methodist I know IRL.

-The whole politeness facade was thrown out the window once Oprah Winfrey was mentioned, she may have been rightly criticized, but the venom I saw on that thread was more indicative of conservative evangelical judgementalism than Wesleyan compassion.

-a couple of posters really got worked up over the whole "Common Era" dating system. Only a conservative evangelical would think that was a big deal.

-I've seen advocacy for the "Contemporary Service" here, which is an invention of the modern conservative evangelical movement.

-The Wesley's Parish Book Club is studying a book by a very conservative evangelical who not only is not a Wesleyan, he's not even an Arminian. Now, I must admit, it IS a decent book, but I'd rather see Wesley's Parish feature books by people that are closer to Wesleyan or Methodist beliefs.

There are some other examples, but you get the idea.
Would you like me to contact you when you don't post?:) I can do that!^_^
I welcome contact by anyone who wants to have some real conversation. The polite fellowship posts are fine for starters, but I'm really far more interested in what you think about God, life, the church and the universe, than I am in whether or not you're glad it's the weekend. So, my answer to that question depends upon what you're going to want to talk about if you contact me.

I don't see why everyone's so afraid they might get into an argument with me. I'm just an anonymous nobody on the internet. You can turn me right off anytime you want. (and I'm sure many posters here already have.)

EDIT: conversation continued in the Staff Feedback forum :)

I may have to conceed this one.

(*emphasis mine) Really? You may be right, but I think you have to be careful when you start steriotyping (I'm sure I spelled that wrong). Just an aside -I'm not sure I'd agree that we advocate contemporary services (and btw I prefer traditional liturgy).

OK. Sounds good to me.

Thank you for speaking up about your concern. After thinking about your reaction to it, I can see where the title could lead someone to believe it could be exclusionary, which definitely isn't the point. I'm so sorry it made you feel excluded, and my apologies to anyone else who felt the same way. I've edited the title for that purpose.

BTW... the list isn't for mods... it came out of a discussion in the ASA thread a while ago about where some members were and how they were doing.
