  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi guys,

I was just thinking about the Eucharist and I'm curious to know. What's so special about it? Not that I'm mocking it but I really want to know the significance of it. Also, is there a biblical basis for taking Communion every week? And is there a biblical basis for the Real Presence?

Can anyone share? :)

By the way, my church had communion this past weekend and wow....it was amazing...I loved it!! We had those little wafers and even REAL wine!! I almost wanted to cry!! :)

I never seriously understood the significance of the Lord's supper until I started studying Catholicism, and by God's grace my church had Communion which is something we rarely do (I started attending a different church, but I won't get into that). Honestly I wish I can partake in it every week, but that would mean I'd have to change denominations.

But it was at least wonderful knowing that I had the privilege to partake in it. The other day I read about some N. Korean Christians who haven't taken Communion in like 40-50 years because of the Communist regime. Can you imagine not being able to partake in the Lord's supper because it's just not possible? With that in mind, I don't think I'll ever take Communion for granted.

God bless!!

-Jason
P.S. Anyone know any good books on the Eucharist?

To Jason:

Scott Hahn has a lecture on the Supper of the Lamb, or a title similar to that.

Your best bet, though, is to begin your exploration with the sixth chapter of John. It's called "The Bread of Life Discourse." Read it slowly, and several times.

And I'll look for a Scott Hahn link for you! ;)

Peace be with you,

oh my yes.  Like was suggested, start with John 6, that's the real meat of it.  also, 1 cor 11 talks about it.  If you want more, there's a thread called "the argumentative transubstatiation thread" or something like that in the protestant/catholic discussion room.  It's a pretty one sided affair.  The OT is absolutely laced with references to it also.

if you want a heck of a book telling you why it's true (this isn't for the slow reader or faint of heart) try "NOt by bread alone" by Robert Sungenis.  it's about 400 pages, so it's probably more than you want to know.

The Eucharist is the true Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There are many references and foreshadowings it in the Bible. John 6 is the strongest. Jesus stated that my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. If you do not partake of my body and blood, you have no life in you. The people were grossed out by Jesus' sayings. They thought he was suggesting canibalism. Many of them started murmering and began to walk away. He did not call them back to explain that he was only talking figuritively. No, he restated, I solemnly assure you, my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. He then turned to the apostales and asked, Will you leave me also? He did not back off because the teaching was hard to believe.

And today, even though many peole find it to be a hard teaching, the Eucharist remains the very center of Catholic faith and worship. I am awed to even think about receiving Jesus into my body. There is nothing on earth that can compare to the sublime experience of receiving Jesus in Holy Communioin!

In Christ, Patrick

Wow....I feel so silly!  I don't know why I didn't notice these verses before:

1 Corinthians 11:29
For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]ation to himself by NOT DISCERNING THE LORD'S BODY.

Matthew 26:26-28
And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; THIS IS MY BODY.  And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For THIS IS MY BLOOD of the new testament

John 6:51
I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

John 6:52
The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat?

John 6:53
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

John 6:54
Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 6:55
For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.

John 6:56
He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

John 6:57
As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me...

John 6:60
Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard [this], said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

John 6:61
When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you?...

John 6:66
From that [time] many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

They speak so loudly! =)

Also, to VOW and others, thank you SO much for the links/books and for sharing :)

I know I'm going to enjoy his Hahn's teachings on the Lamb's supper =)

God bless!
