In class this morning, my professor asked us to write down our answers to these questions. It was very thought provoking.

1.Should teenagers be required to get parents permission to receive birth control?
2. Should Libraries restrict the type of websites that can be viewed from their computers? (Remember, censorship could eliminate christian material as well)
3.Should Highschool students be required to take art or music courses?
4.Should schools be allowed to remove classic books from its libraries?
5.Should colleges be required to provide daycare for students with children?
6.Should Highschools be required to provide daycare for students with kids?
7.Should Highschool students be required to do community service as part of education.
8.Should foreigners be required to speak at least some english to be a citizen?

1.) No. kids (above 13) should b able to get conctraceptives without parental permission.
2.) A lot of kids use the library computr as a study too, for research and such. Cencoring would limit their ability to research.
3.) I think ducation in the arts should definitely be available for those who want it. But a kid's not gonna enjoy it very much if he's forced into it.
4.) Why would they want to?
5.) Forced to, no. Should they, yea. Same with Q. #6.
7.) I don't really see why. Highschoolers are bogged down enough with extra carricular activities, homework and family stuff, why overwork em?
8.) Yes. To be a citizen of this, or any other country, you should be able to make your own way, which means learning the language. If I were to go to Germany, I would need to learn German, if I planned to live there for a while. I wouldn't expect all of Germany to learn English just for lil ol' me.

1.Should teenagers be required to get parents permission to receive birth control?
In a more perfect world where children wouldn't have to fear telling their parents that they might have/be having sex, then yes, simply due to medical reasons. But I think that due to our culture's view on sex, requiring teens to get a parent's permission for birth control will result in less teens persuing proper safe sex.

2. Should Libraries restrict the type of websites that can be viewed from their computers? (Remember, censorship could eliminate christian material as well)

Again, in a more perfect world where censorship software works properly, then I would say get rid of the porn, just because I don't want some freaky guy jerking off in the library. But censorship software works poorly and often ends up blocking benign sites and/or sites sites that the company that produces the censorship software has a personal grudge with.

3.Should Highschool students be required to take art or music courses?

Encouraged, yes. Forced, not necessarily. I'd support a mandatory intro to the arts program like they did in my high school
4.Should schools be allowed to remove classic books from its libraries?
No. A library should not remove a book unless it is directly causing harrassment or violence towards an innocent person.
5.Should colleges be required to provide daycare for students with children?
No. But it would be a good idea if all colleges did.
6.Should Highschools be required to provide daycare for students with kids?
This I would be more inclined to say yes. You really can't get anywhere without a highschool diploma, and society gains nothing by keeping those young mothers from attending school.
7.Should Highschool students be required to do community service as part of education.
Encouraged, yes. Forced to? Probably not, at least outside of school. If they're supposed to take a "class" during school time in which they are supposed to go and volunteer somewhere, then I'd see little problem with it.
8.Should foreigners be required to speak at least some english to be a citizen?
No. The US has no official language. We just speak what they majority of us speak. But immigrants should be offered free lessons in English at a community college or something, because historically most immigrants have come from very low classes and cannot afford to learn English in their home counrty or when they arrive in the US.

1.Should teenagers be required to get parents permission to receive birth control?
No, it serves no purpose. To give information to parents who in all likelihood don’t want to hear, or puts kids in situation they don’t want to be in, doesn’t help either party.
2. Should Libraries restrict the type of websites that can be viewed from their computers? (Remember, censorship could eliminate christian material as well)To a degree, librarians should reserve the right to react to things they see as inappropriate use, but other wise, no.

3.Should Highschool students be required to take art or music courses? No, but Art and music services should be available to every student, even if they are not enrolled in the formal programs. One of the biggest problems I saw back in the day, was teachers never allowing for free use of the resources. Now I understand they are scarce, but why make an abstract field – Liner. The same problem is with this suggestion.

4.Should schools be allowed to remove classic books from its libraries?
To do so there would have to be reason, so sure
As for arbitrarily taking books off selves. Only if it was to rise funding for proactive, innovative new programs, would I agree.

5.Should colleges be required to provide daycare for students with children?
6.Should Highschools be required to provide daycare for students with kids?

I do believe in public daycare, but implementing such a program into the current institutions is not the best means of implementation IMO.
7.Should Highschool students be required to do community service as part of education?
Yes, But I wish to make clear that I by no means think this is making them any more socially aware, or a future giver. We just need a lot more practical learning, and this is just one of the ways we could start trying to tackle that problem.

8.Should foreigners be required to speak at least some english to be a citizen?
Yes, as a general rule, but exception should not be hard to come by

1.Should teenagers be required to get parents permission to receive birth control?

No.

2. Should Libraries restrict the type of websites that can be viewed from their computers? (Remember, censorship could eliminate christian material as well)

No

3.Should Highschool students be required to take art or music courses?

Yes, an intro course of some kind but not to heavy

4.Should schools be allowed to remove classic books from its libraries?

No, the classics are an important testamony to the struggle of man.

5.Should colleges be required to provide daycare for students with children?

They should, but not by force.

6.Should Highschools be required to provide daycare for students with kids?

Yes, absolutely.

7.Should Highschool students be required to do community service as part of education.

Why would I go out and waste my time doing "the man's" job for "the man" when "the man" doesn't do anything for me.
But, it should be easily available on a voluntary basis.

8.Should foreigners be required to speak at least some english to be a citizen
No

1. No.

2. Yes. It is a public building.

3. No. Many students will not be entering any occupation dealing with art or music. Eliminating these requirements would allow students to focus on electives that correspond to what they want to become when they are out of school. Students who are interested in art and music may still take the classes, but it should not be required of everyone.

4. No. As it is, too many school libraries are filled with boring books that few would read willingly. I think that the more intellectual students need the classics, and it would be a shame not to accomodate their needs.

5. Yes.

6. No. The administration of high schools should not promote sex among teens by pledging their support of children that may be created as a result of intercourse between teenagers. In this case it is a deterrant to instill moral values into the student.

7. No. I do not see how obligatory community service could help students in any area. At the very least there is no reason why it should be obligatory.

8. Yes. I expect to have to know the language of a foreign country if I choose to become a citizen in their land. If they want to become part of us, they must accept at least some of our traditions. They can remain culturally distinct, but they must know the English language, I think, in order to be useful citizens.

1. I would hope that if I had a child they would be comfortable talking to me about this...but no...I would rather give them access to it to be safe and do the right thing than have to suffer other consequences.
2. No, while I think that there are a lot of things that minors shouldn't see online....I would like to know that my children are going to have access to learning and research on many topics.
3. Yes, I think that a good balance in course curiculum is a good thing. (I work in education and have noticed that students who have participated in the arts are much more successful in higher ed.)
4. no, they shouldn't.
5. Since I work at a university, I think that they should provide it and my school is working towards that now. There are very different types of students that attend colleges now that could benefit from programs like this.
6. Not really, there are many high schools in the US that are for young parents that provide day care.
7. No, community service is something that should come from the heart. If students are forced to do community service....what good does it do? They don't want to be there and wouldn't benefit anyone.
8. No, that is not what the US was founded on. The land that us Americans live on does not have English as the original language. Us non-native Americans are the real foreigners. Plus, that is the beauty of this country, many people of all languages and cultures being able to benefit.
