Soul knitting, comes from the phrases’s single occurrence of the idea in 1 Sam. 18.1, Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.


Apparently, translators of the Bible see the phrase as an idion/euphemism because other translators translate it …

NIV Jonathan became one in spirit with David​

MSG a bond was forged between them​

NLT There was an immediate bond between them​

It simply means, David and Jonathan became bosom buddies. Trying to take the single occurrence and of a figure of speech, an idiomatic expression, and building a doctrine on it is very bad exegesis.

It sounds like some translators enjoyed to explain everything in an elegant way each time according to their liking, or some translations simply aren't completely accurate. but it is true, you won't want to base "soul ties exist" on that. I think one in spirit and one flesh are both different from the intermingling of the souls. One must also recognize this popular soul tie teaching often has negative connotations, which even if using those verses to promote the idea of soul ties, it doesn't give any creedence to the negative teachings about soul ties.

In my experience, soul ties have just been a way to classify the emotional and spiritual affects of different experiences and explaining them in theory, rather than by a real Biblical basis.
