  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Questions about Judaism, for information not for debate.

The purpose of life is to keep the Torah as we agreed upon with the Lord. We keep His Torah, we are His people, and He is our deity. We are not promised any individual awards for keeping the Torah, but we are promised things for the community.

I also believe that we're to help repair the broken world, which is Tikkun Olam.

Are Christians also Jews?
A Christian believes everything you believe. Would that be qualified to be a Jew?

YHWH gives the Torah without explaining why. What is your "explanations" to what's commanded in the Torah? Everything should have a reason. YHWH says: Do This. Would any Jews ask back: why?

Abraham questioned. I see no reason to think that we don't question it, but the end result is that He commanded it so no matter what we question about it, we're supposed to do it. But we do have a lot of different explanations for what we're supposed to do and how we're supposed to do it. There are a lot of things that are vague and need explanation.

No. One isn't a Jew through beliefs.

A Jew is someone who is either born of a Jewish mother or converts to Judaism. Christianity is not Judaism.

I often run into the term "Judeo-Christian God". From the Jewish perspective, is there such a thing?
That can’t be answered from the Jewish prospective on this site. But yes, that term is quite popular.

I know you might want to avoid this like the Y. pestis, but how do you feel about the term "Abrahamic religions"? You know, the big three plus some smaller offshoots.

Can't speak for Jay, but I don't have any issues with that. Nor do I have any issue believing that Christians and Muslims believe in the same deity that Jews believe in.

That was a good tie in. 10 extra bonus points for you.

That term doesn’t bother me at all, if they can truly tie in to Abraham. Scientology probably doesn’t make the cut.

Dlamberth asked a really interesting question because he asked about God, and didn't ask just about "Judeo-Christianity". I'd think you have to say that Judeo-Christianity is a real thing, given the grand sweep of human history and it's influence in sociology, morality, politics, war, etc.?

In my opinion, Christians just mean Christianity when they use the phrase and tack on Judeo for some reason I can't comprehend.

Do you think Abraham would be disturbed by the advent of Christianity and Islam?

C'mon, don't play dumb. :) Without Judaism, no subsequent Christianity. And in 21st century America we're still filing lawsuits over the public display of the Ten Commandments.

I don’t, no.

This is probably as far as I can go in a "not for debate" thread. I'll give you a like for that answer, since I can't give 1/2 a like. ;)

I'm not playing dumb. Sure, without Judaism there'd be no Christianity, but the phrase doesn't describe things that Jews shared with most often and if it did it was a bad thing. "Judeo-Christianity" locked Jews in ghettos in Rome, for example. I'd prefer to just say Christianity instead of taking Judeo on because it isn't talking about what Jews did, it's talking about what Christians did.

And before that Jews were hunting down the new sect for persecution, and ratting them out to the common enemy (Roman authorities) for punishment of death. There was bad blood from the beginning. But these things are not what's meant by Judeo-Christianity as a continuing thread of influential moral/philosophical thought.

Jews lacked the power to really do much in the Roman Empire. I mean no offense, but Christianity wants to depict the Jews as both powerless and powerful depending on which tells the better tale.

To the point though: You guys do not take your philosophy from Jewish thought of the past 1500 years. It's your own.

Hi Folks - Just a couple of questions that interest me;
Are there any communities where blood is still applied to a doorway for Passover?
Head coverings, men- women, what are the present day practices and what is the understanding of the reasons for them?
Are present day practices of head covering the same as 2000 yrs ago?
Thanks
