I wasn't aware that holy water has salt in it! How many traditions do this? In the Orthodox church I went to they just use tap water for it.

In our church it's up to the priest. Most of them don't use salt, but at least one do. It's to prevent (or at least reduce) the "slimyness". Also a bit antibacterial.. but there is a prayer over the salt when it is added, but it's the water that is important.

Just go to a Daily Eucharist and you won't need so much at home.

Why not both? And we don't NEED holy water at home, but I like to "take a part" of the church home to give focus (yeah, that might sound a bit strange, but I hope you understand me anyway).
But Daily Eucharist is wonderful! I have noticed a "change" in me since I started an (almoast) daily Eucharist. Really something to recomand.

We have a font next to our front door. :) It only holds about a 1/4 cup of water. We bless ourselves coming in and going out of the house, and before our daily Rosary. We also keep a bottle of Holy Water for refilling the font and for blessing the house itself.

The fonts at our church were empty of water for the whole of Lent, not just the end of Holy Week. They were filled with an ashy looking sand. Happens every year...and every year I forget.  It always surprises me to reach my hand into the font and encounter that dry grainy sand...but it makes me think of the desert and the ashes of sorrow...it's a great Lenten reminder.
