Hi,

As I redo my devotional area in my home, I would like to add a holy water font. I've always just used a bottle of holy water. I think having a holy water font would be a nice addition to my home altar. I've got some questions though about using a holy water font.

How much water does the font contain? Isn't it quite a decent amount. Where do you get it? I mean isn't it a lot to be getting from your parish church? Or are you getting it from somewhere else.

Also how often do you have to change or add to the water? I mean doesn't the water evaporate some, get a slimy film in the font itself, etc.? If you take out the old water to clean up the font and put fresh water in it, what do you do with that holy water? You don't just pour it down the sink, do you?

Thanks for the response. I appreciate it. Take care.

God bless you,
Sarah

Sarah,

I always use a bottle myself, so I'm not sure of how often one would have to refill a font. But at any rate, the average font probably contains around a cup of water or less. Not a whole lot. I'm sure you can find holy water fonts that hold much more, but on average...

As for disposal, all blessed items should be burried or simply placed in/on the ground outside.

Hope this helps.

Well, I suppose the volume of water that it will hold completely depends on the size of the font. :)

I have a smaller font near our front door that doesn't hold much water. It does evaporate...we usually just refill our holy water bottle at church, after Mass as needed.

As for getting slimey, I would imagine that that depends on what the material is that it's made of. My is a sort of resign, so it does get a bit slimey (over the course of a few months). When I notice that it's getting like that, I just wait until it needs to be refilled and clean it out with some bleach and water.

I wasn't sure if there was a standard size font that most people used and therefore how much water it would hold.

I do like the idea of getting a font instead of just using the bottle I've got right now. I've been filling it up at my parish as I need some more.

Bleach and water. Sounds like a good cleaning tip when I do get a font and it needs a good washing.

Thanks. Take care.

Blessings,
Sarah

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but what do you use holy water for at home? Do you drink it?

Hi,

No, I don't mind if you ask a question. I can only speak for myself. I always bless myself with the holy water when I begin my prayer and devotion time at home. I have heard of people who drink it, especially Orthodox Christians. That was a good question. So what does anyone else here use holy water in their home for? Take care.

Blessings,
Sarah

Wow, I've never heard of anyone drinking it before! I use it in pretty much the same ways you do...

I certanly don't drink it, but it was interesting to hear that some do(maybe we should ask a orthodox - it may be a myth). I bless myself with it before going to bed (sort of as protection).

Yes, the fonts are empty in the church(es), and so is the tabernacle - from eve on Maundy Thurstday till the mass in the night betveen Easter Eve and Easter Sunday.

I've talked with some Orthodox Christians who told me that they generally drink the holy water, especially in the morning. Here's a site that talks about how Anglicans, Roman Catholics, and the Eastern Orthodox use holy water.

I bless myself with holy water usually in the morning and before bedtime at night. I also bless myself with it when I have my devotion and prayer time.

Take care.

Blessings,
Sarah

I think the fonts and tabernacle were empty so that we could feel the "emptyness" i the churches as a preperation for the joy when we celebrate the resurextion. - or to be nore precise; thet is the reason the tabernacle is empty, and the fonts are empty becouse then we don't kneel before an empty tabernacle (we usuallly bless ourselfas with Holy Water while kneeling). and also: the water reminds us of our baptism - that we dies and are reborn in christ, and during goodfriday, we don't want to think about being rebourn or anything "happy" but we focus on the suffering, sin , death etc.
..but now the fasting is over :)

The Lort is risen!!!

I think the most common use of holy water is to bless yourself. :) Crossing yourself with holy water reminds you of your baptism. I also use holy water to bless items in my apartment sometimes. :)

Of course, these are the rubric in the Anglican Church, but the only difference, I think, is that they are in English, rather than Latin.

II. Of the Manner of Blessing the Water.

V/.Our help is in the Name of the LORD.
R/.Who hath made Heaven and earth.
I ADJURE thee, O creature of salt, by the Living + GOD, by the True + GOD, by the Holy + GOD, by GOD Who commanded thee to be cast, by the Prophet Elisha, into the water to heal the barrenness thereof; that thou become salt exorcised for the health of believers; and be thou to all them that take of thee health of soul and body, and let all vain imaginations and wickedness, all deceits and wiles of the Devil and every unclean spirit fly and depart from the place where thou shalt be sprinkled, adjured by Him, Who is to come and will judge the quick and the dead and the world by fire. R/. Amen.
Let us pray.
ALMIGHTY and Everlasting god, we humbly beseech Thine infinite mercy, that it may please Thee, of Thy loving-kindness to bl+ess and to hal+low this creature of salt which Thou hast given for the use of men, let it be to all them that take of it health of mind and body, and let whatsoever shall be touched or sprinkled therewith be free from all uncleanness, and from all assaults of spiritual wickedness. Through JESUS CHRIST, Thy SON, our LORD, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the Unity of the HOLY GHOST, ever One GOD, world without end.
Let us pray is not said.
I ADJURE thee, O creature of water, in the Name of GOD the FATHER + Almighty, in the Name of JESUS + CHRIST, His SON, our LORD, and in the power of the HOLY + GHOST, that thou become water exorcised for putting to flight all the power of the Enemy, and do thou avail to cast out and send hence that same Enemy, with all his apostate angels, through the power of the Same our LORD JESUS CHRIST, Who is to come and will judge the quick and the dead and the world by fire. R/. Amen.
Let us pray.
O GOD, Who for the salvation of mankind hast ordained that water should be the matter of one of Thy greatest Sacraments: favourably regard us who call upon Thee, andpour the power of Thy bene+diction upon this element, prepared by much cleansing; that this Thy creature, meet for Thy mysteries, may receive the effect of Thy grace, and so may cast out devils, and
[page 99]
put sickness to flight, that whosoever in the habitations of Thy faithful shall be sprinkled therewith, may be made free from all uncleanness and delivered from all hurtfulness; there let no spirit of pestilence nor corrupt air abide: thence let all the wiles of the hidden Enemy depart; and if there be aught that layeth snares against the peace or safety of them that dwell therein, let it fly before the sprinkling of this water, and so let the place gain health by the invocation of Thy Holy Name, and be defended from all assaults. Through JESUS CHRIST, Thy SON, our LORD, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the Unity of the HOLY GHOST, ever One GOD, world without end.
Here let the Priest thrice cast salt into the water, in the form of a Cross, saying at the same time:
BE this salt and water mixed together, in the Name of the FA+THER, and of the S+ON, and of the HOLY + GHOST. R/.Amen.
If the water be in several vessels, the Priest will cast salt in the same manner into each of them.
V/.The LORD be with you. R/.And with thy spirit.
Let us pray.
O GOD, Who art the Author of unconquered might, the King of the Empire that cannot be overthrown, the ever-glorious Conqueror: Who dost keep under the power of the dominion that is against Thee: Who rulest the raging of the fierce Enemy; Who dost mightily fight against the wickedness of Thy foes; we entreat and beseech Thee, with fear and trembling, O LORD, graciously to behold this creature of salt and water, mercifully shine upon it, hallow it with the dew of Thy loving-kindness: that wheresoever it may be sprinkled, through the invocation of Thy Holy Name, all haunting of the unclean spirit may be driven away, far thence let the terror of the venomous serpent be cast, and wheresoever it shall be, there let the presence of the HOLY GHOST be vouchsafed to us who shall ask for Thy mercy. Through JESUS CHRIST, Thy SON, our LORD, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee, in the Unity of the same HOLY GHOST, ever One GOD, world without end. Ry. Amen.

I am remiss in having Holy Water at home.
:crossrc: Thank you for this reminder.

I also need a bigger font. The only one I have is rather old, and it seems tiny. Only enough room for fingers and a MUCH bigger one would be better used...

However; with evaporation, it might be best all around to keep it bottled.

Never thot anyone could drink holy water. Hmmm.

Peace!
